Chapter 1
My name is Haymitch Abernathy. Let me tell you how this all started. In the ruins of what used to be North America, lies the country called Panem. If you are the reader, you probably live in the 21st century. Well, all I can tell you is that I live thousands of years in the future. But it's not what you think the future is like. 50 years ago, from my time, is what the Capitol calls the Dark Days. A time in which the war was going on. You see, the capitol rules all of Panem. Panem is a shining giant capitol city with 12 districts surrounding it. But 50 years ago there used to be 13 districts.
The capitol treats us, the districts, very poorly. They make us do all the work: harvest food, manufacture goods, fish, and other stuff. All that stuff we do goes to the capitol. So 50 years ago, The districts waged war against the capitol. District 13 was destroyed in the process. In the end, the capitol won. In reminder that the capitol has all power over all districts, they created the hunger games.
The capitol has each district send one boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18 to compete annualy. The 24 kids are brought to the capitol and make all of us watch them be put into a large arena and fight to the death. The outdoor arena is made of different terains each year and are miles and miles long and wide. Each yearthe arenat can be anywhere from a scorching desert all the way to a frozen waste land. They televise it live all over Panem. The games can last from about 2 days all the way to about 3 months! They wait untill there is only one person left. That person becomes a victor.
If you win, your reward is a life of pleasure and everyone in your district recieves food for a whole year. You live in a mansion and become super rich. But it's horrible because the capitol makes every one treat the Games as a festivity. But really, there just saying "Look,we take your kids and have them die. We have all power. If you ever so just lift a finger, we destroy every last one of you."
I live in district 12. We are the poorest district. Our main manufacture is coal. We have alot of coal mines. Sometimes the men that work in the mines die in mine explosions. I am 15 years old and live with my Mom and Dad. My friends, well, let's just say I'm not very friendly. Most people despise me and I despise most people. There. Put it that way.
"Haymitch! Come to the tv! we have to watch the quarter quell reading now." says my mother. The quarter quell is a 25th anniversery of the games. every 25 years it calls for a glorified version of the games. A more terrifying version. Now we will find out what that will be. I go sit on the floor in front of the tv. We can't afford a couch.
On the tv, I see president snow walk onto a stage. He always has white hair and puffy lips. He is dressed in a tux. another little boy in white comes up to greet him. He hands snow a small wooden box. When they created the Hunger games, they made preparations for future quarter quells. The president opens the box. inside are neat arranged rows of small little envelopes. On each one are the rules for a quarter quell. the president pulls one out marked 50 on it. Apparently they thought up centuries of quarter quells to come since there were too many envelopes for me to count.
There has only been one quarter quell so far. This will be the second. The president starts to read the card. " As a reminder that in the war 2 rebels died for every capitol citizen, this year districts will reap twice as many tributes for the games." He goes on and on about how this will be different and so on and so forth. So this year there will be 48 tributes instead of 24. 48 more tributes to be sent to the arena. And ultimately, more dead kids.
At the reaping, everyone in the district gathers to the square. There is a stage in the middle with two glass balls with papers spinning around in them. Every teenager gets a paper with their name on it. Some can sign up for tesserae. By doing that, you enter your name 10 times more than your age. In addition you recieve grain and oil for your family.
It's not much of a risk though since there are thousands of teenagers in 12 anyways. I signed up for tesserae but I'm not worried. I never am. The kids have to stand in a roped off section. Some are on the sides gripping peoples hands trying to get the fear of being picked shaken off. Victors aren't picked for the reaping because they already have.
That's the deal if you win. You are out of the reaping for life. But district 12 has no victors. Now a lady named annabell lanturning fom the capitol enters on the stage. On her sides are the two giant glass balls full of papers. "Alright everybody" she starts to say. "It's tie for the 50th Hunger games reaping!Ladies first!" she reaches her hand inside one of the glass balls and pulls out 2 pieces of paper. She says a name I don't remember and a little 13 year old girl with long black hair comes up on stage looking like she is about to cry. Somewhere in the crowd a woman is crying
Then she reads the second piece of paper. "Maysilee Donner." so far so good. another person I don't know. But she must be my age because a few feet away is a girl clinging to two others. All of them blond. She acknoledges one of them as emma everdeen and the other one minerva donner. I'm guessing her sister, or twin because she looks exactly like her. Maysilee Donner walks up the stage holding back tears.
Before annabell picks the boys she announces that 2 tributes will be trained seperately. So a boy and a girl will be trained together but the other boy and girl will be trained together apart from the first two. Then she reaches into the boys ball and pulls out 1 paper. She says the name and again I was not listening to the name and a boy about 17 iis going up on stage. He looks like he is from the seam-the poorest area in district 12. He walks up but there are 2 girls a boy and 2 adults a woman and a man that are on the verge of crying behind where he was standing.
Annabell says "Ok.We have one more tribute to go." She reaches into the boys ball. The tributes that were annouunced so far are looking at each other, wondering what to feel like. When she pulls out the piece of paper she unfolds it. She calls out the name of the boy tribute. I wasn't paying attention again so there is a pause. In the backround I hear 2 familiar voices crying. My heart starts to sink and I hear Annabell say the name one more time. This time it's loud and clear that the name is "Haymitch Abernathy."
End of chapter 2- keep updating!I hope you liked part 1.
