"So, how do you feel about there being a girl on your team?"
It was the next day and Beau had come over around four in the afternoon.
He helped my dad with the grilling, we were having steaks upon my request, and they were already getting along.
When we sat down for dinner though, it got real.
My dad, of course, was asking Beau all the normal questions a dad would ask the guy dating his daughter. From "why do you like her?" to "are you willing to wait for her to want kids or how would you feel if she doesn't want anymore kids?", let's just say, I looked like a tomato.
Beau, being the sweet, amazing guy he is, answered all of them perfectly. I think my dad is starting to like him more.
They had now got on to the subject of hockey and how Beau was a fan of both my dads when he was younger. That led to my dad showing him all their old jerseys, pictures, awards, etc.
It was cute and it looked like they were bonding.
My uncle also asked questions but they weren't as embarrassing, he knew I couldn't handle two people grilling Beau at once.
"I actually don't mind it. When she first got on the team, I thought of her as another one of the guys. Obviously, things have changed," he laughed as he glanced at me, "but I still respect her wishes of taking care of herself on ice."
"I'm glad you respect that but I hope you do kick someone's ass if they do her wrong, on or off the ice."
"Dad!"
"You have my word."
Neither of them payed attention to me as I tried to protest. I knew they both wanted me to be safe and my dad would want me to be with someone who would protect me.
"Grandpa, you said a bad word!" Lily jumped up from her chair and ran into the kitchen.
A second later she came running out, the swear jar in her hand. Without saying anything, she walked over to her grandpa, stood in front of him with one hand on her hip and held out the jar.
"I'm sorry Lil's." Dad took out his wallet and put a dollar in the already almost full jar.
"That's the third one today grandpa! You're on the naughty list for sure!"
"Wow Lily, that's a lot of money you got there." Beau took the jar from Lily, who happily passed it to him.
"I get a dollar every time someone says something bad."
"Oh really? They must saw a lot of bad words then huh?"
"Yes! My grandpa has a bad mouth. We should use soap to clean it out!"
"Okay Lily, that's enough." I laughed. "We should get you to bed, it's way past your bed time. Say goodnight to everyone."
"But mommy, that's not fair! I don't want to go to bed." She gave me a sad face and when it didn't work, she turned to Beau.
"What if I read you a book Lily?"
"Really? Mommy can Beau read me a book?!" Lily turned to me, wide eyed.
"Yes, that's fine with me. We just need to give you a bath first."
She jumped up and quickly ran out of the dining room. With a laugh, I told Beau I'd call him when she was in bed and I followed her up the stairs.
I quickly gave her a bath, letting her play with her toys for a couple minutes. Since my elbow was still messed up, I made her be a big girl and get dressed all by herself.
