I turn around in circles until I make myself dizzy and plop on the ground. I look up and stare at her. At the moment she is sitting down on the couch in the living room typing away at her computer. I want her to look at me. She stops typing and turns her head and I'm so excited that she is about look at me I start wagging my tail like crazy. She smiles when she sees me, puts her laptop away and says, 'Come here, Blitz.' I jump to my feet and pounce onto her lap and she chuckles. I put my face up to her cheek and give her a little kiss. She starts to pat my side so I rollover so she can rub my belly. After patting my belly she starts to trace the black patch on my left eye, and I bark happily.
The day I came to live with my owner was the best day of my life. I was an eight-week-old Dalmatian pup. I had been roaming the streets because I lost my mother. I was so scared I stayed hidden in a box down a dark alley most of the time. The day I met her I was so hungry I had to come out and bumped straight into her leg. I started trembling when I realised I had been found because mummy always said, 'don't let the humans find you, if they do they throw you in a cage.' But this human bent down patted my head with a smile on her face and said, 'poor puppy, you look hungry.' I backed away. When she saw me looking terrified she put her hand in her bag and pulled out a sandwich. She unwrapped the gladwrap and left it on the ground. Hesitantly and slowly I made my way over to the food and sniffed it. My stomach growled loudly and she chuckled. I was as hungry as a bear that I ate the sandwich in one bite. After I finished she said, 'if you want to live with me you can.' She stood up tapped her leg for me to follow and started walking slowly away. I was so confused I just stood there. She turned around looked at me and smiled so I tilted my head in curiosity. She started walking again and this time I followed her. If it wasn't for her kindness that day I wouldn't be lying on her lap right now feeling safe and loved.
A long time passed since I started living with her and I have become extremely worried about her health. Last week she collapsed and was sent to the hospital. While she was in the hospital her daughter came to look after me but I couldn't relax. I was anxious and would howl every night for her to come home. A few weeks after she was admitted to the hospital I decided that I needed to see her. I made my way to the backyard and started digging a hole under the back fence. Once I was out I followed her scent to the hospital. I could never forget her scent. She smelt like roses with a lavender mix. I made my way down the street, which had potted trees swaying in the breeze all the way along. It was a sunny day and the sun was making the black spots on my back shine. Once I turned the corner I could smell her more clearly and bolted down the street pass the cars and dodging people. At last I reached the big glass doors to the hospital.
Once I entered the doors I had three nurses run up to me shouting to get out. I became panicked and ran further in. I reached a door and I knew instantly that she was behind it. I started barking and scratching at the door. The nurses finally caught up to me and realised how desperate I was to see the lady behind the door.
'Ms Hunter, there is a Dalmatian here who I think wants to see you.'
The nurse opened the door and I stood in the doorway looking at her lying on the bed asleep. I walked up to her slowly and placed my nose under her hand and whimpered softly. She opened her eyes slowly and a bright smile appeared on her face.
'Oh Blitz! I have missed you so much,' she said with a hoarse voice. I barked happily and brought my face to her cheek and gave her a kiss. She patted my head and suddenly said in a very sad voice with one lonely tear trickling down her face, 'I'm not going to make it Blitz, they say tonight might be my last.' I licked the salty tear away and cocked my head to the side because I did not understand why she was so sad. The nurse standing in the door way spoke up and said, 'Blitz can stay here with you tonight Ms Hunter I can tell you both need each other.'
'Thank-you.'
That night as I lay on the end of the bed I can hear her breathing slow and I finally realised what was going on. My heart felt like it was going to fall out of my chest at that moment. I made my way up to her face and rested my head below her chin. I hear her chuckle quietly as she patted my head and said, 'thank-you for being in my life Blitz. I love you. Goodbye.' I gave her one last kiss on the cheek as her breathing comes to a stop. I whimpered very quietly until I too fell asleep.
