Soon after the incident in science class, Lucia was sent to the school therapist along with the bird version of Heather Gates who was squawking and growling in her arms. She looked down at the blue eyed raven, "Listen, I can try to turn you back, okay? Just please, shut up."
Her black beak clamped shut as she stared at Luce with angry eyes that soon turned into sadness and realization as to what had happened to her. That's when she squirmed even more making it harder to hold on to her.
"Cut it the fuck out!" Heather shrunk in Luce's arms and shivered a little. Lucia took a deep breath, "I'm sorry for turning you into a bird, okay? But you had no right to talk about Natalie that way. You don't even know her. If you promise to behave, I can make a mental link with you so that we can talk to each other."
After a long pause, Heather's feathery head nodded. Lucia placed a black nail to her own forehead before tapping Heather's also. Then, the nonstop babbling began.
"What am I going to do?!" "What about my friends?!" "What the hell are you, Lucifer?!"
Lucia flinched at the horrid nickname and had to take a deep breath to keep from punt kicking the feathery bully. "I don't know what I am, and I try not to use my power."
They reached the councilor's office and found Mrs. Fey sitting in her wicker chair surrounded by plants of all sorts. Her green eyes met the odd couple and a grin spread on her small lips. She flipped her blond hair over her shoulder, "Come in, Ms. Damon....Ms. Gates."
Luce took a seat opposite the Sprite of a woman and Heather perched on her shoulder screaming at Mrs. Fey about how it wasn't fair and how Luce should be suspended. She smirked, "She can't hear you, Heather. So shut it."
Mrs. Fey arched an eyebrow, "You're probably wondering why you were sent here of all places?" Luce nodded, and Mrs. Fey flicked a wrist making the office door close to everyone's surprise. "Well you see, it's sort of my job to watch for any magic appearing in the student body. Usually, signs don't appear until late middle school, so I'm surprised we're just now finding you, Ms. Damon."
Lucia stared at the slim woman slack jawed. "God! This whole school has gone to Hell!" Heather screamed. Mrs Fey's green eyes seemed to glow as she smacked her small hands on the wooden desk with enough force to knock some fossilized flowers and pencils off its surface. "I've heard enough from you, Heather Melanie Gates!"
Luce's eyes widened at the use of her enemy's whole name, and she could tell it rattled Heather too. "Did you know that you're the main cause of magical flare ups within this school?! You make so many others so miserable and angry that they cast spells without knowing!"
Mrs. Fey took a deep breath fixing her forest green skirt and taking a seat in her chair once more as Heather trembled on Luce's shoulder. The glow in Mrs. Fey's eyes dimmed down as she locked eyes with Heather once more.
"I never understood what your problem was, Ms. Gates. You have a kind family, and anything you want could be yours with a snap of a finger. A lot of children in this school could not say the same. But I believe Ms. Damon has graced you with a beautiful gift. One that will teach you a life lesson you have yet to figure out."
Luce glanced at the black bird on her shoulder as its blue eyes cast to the ground in sadness and shame. "I know I'm not the nicest....but, when your parents are corporate presidents and overseers, everyone seems to expect me to be mean. I never meant to cause anyone harm, it's just what they've created me to be. Please....I don't want to be a bird, Mrs. Fey."
Mrs. Fey smirked, "In due time, I'm sure you won't be. But there's still more business to take care of." The petite woman flipped through various colored papers before fishing out a blue slip from a drawer. She placed it in front of Luce with a pen. "I need you to sign these so you can be transferred."
Luce cocked an eyebrow, "To where?" Mrs. Fey grinned showing slightly sharp teeth, "Why, to Archangel's Academy for the Magically Gifted! Where else? Would you rather go to Grecian's?" Luce stared at the page before her. What about Natalie? What would Kevin think? Seeing no alternative, Luce signed the blue parchment, and as soon as the last letter was scrawled, the paper rolled into a scroll before disappearing.
Mrs. Fey stood from her desk with a sharp smile and a pair of translucent dragonfly wings fluttering on her back. "Tell Hades I said hello?" she asked. She pointed her finger and tapped Luce's forehead making them get sucked into some sort of portal. Luce held on tight to Heather as they got sucked through the airless vacuum before being spat out on a black carpet.
Looking around, they were in someone's office. The walls were blood red with black bookshelves filled with old tomes and books leaned against them. A dark wooden desk was placed near a large window with a skull sitting on the edge next to a photo of a grey skinned child with white hair and eyes. Strange.
As Lucia stood in the center of the office holding Heather's feathery body close to her chest, she couldn't seem to stop herself from getting a closer look at the peculiar child in the black dress. "Her name was Cassandra." Luce jumped at the deep voice and swung around to find a tall man about in his thirties standing behind her wearing a black suit.
"And you two must be Lucia and Heather?" Luce nodded, "Well, welcome to Archangel's. You're just in time for the last class of the day."
