prologue

Jake's POV

I looked around the classroom, wondering who would be paying attention to the teacher blabbering about a bunch of repeated things. My head turned to the noise of an object that hit the floor.Sara, the girl in front of me, scrambled to her feet to pick up her notebook.

"Sorry,"she mumbled getting back to her desk.I watched Sara closely, her dirty blonde hair fell perfectly on her shoulders. She seemed familiar. She put her trembling hand under the desk. She felt around. I could tell she found what she was looking for. She got out a note and stuck it in her purse. Curiosity crept over me. I wanted to reach in her plaited pink purse and pull out the note. I just looked away. People pass notes all the time. This case is not any different.

I glanced at Claire. She was beautiful. She had her dark brown hair pulled up in a high ponytail. Her green eyes looked at me."If you take a picture, it'll last longer," she said the words that I heard a million times in movies.

"OK," I said feeling around my pockets. I took out my phone and took a photo. She put up her hands to block the photo.

"I didn't mean it literally,"she flinched to the sound of the phone taking a picture. It was like watching a vampire in the sun.Except, well, vampires don't exist.

"I was thinking maybe we should go out Friday night, considering we haven't been on a date in a long time."

"I would like that. Maybe we should go shootings guns. I can bring my pistol," she said excitedly.

"OK, I'm trying to be romantic and all. Don't let me be the girl in this relationship.I'll take you shooting some other day." She laughed and replied with a OK.I heard the sound of the bell and the rushing of people to try and get through the door."I'll see you later," I told Claire as I walked out of the classroom. I went to my locker to switch books. I saw Sara across from me digging in Kate's locker. Kate didn't talk to anyone. Literally, not even the teachers. Some rumors even spread that she was death, but I knew that was a lie. She talked to me once. It was a wield conversation. She managed to confuse me. I thought she was mentally ill. She said,"Leave, they found us. Hurry, take her and go,"she was speaking as if in horror. She was obviously crazy. I could have sworn she mumbled,"I'm sorry. They are going to kill us." After that she didn't come to school. It has been 1 week. I guessed she moved or something.

Sara got out a stack of envelopes and stuffed them in her purse. Did she forget that she was not in her locker? She was basically stealing. She dug around deeper and found a bigger envelope. She took out a paper. Her skin turned pale as if she were staring at a ghost. She looked up at me and back down to the piece of paper. It was like I was some sort of killer. She stuffed the paper in the envelope and shoved it in her purse. She started walking quickly, and she was staring at me as if she was expecting me to pounce on her. I didn't know how to react. I just ignored it. I got out my history textbook. Underneath it I spotted a note.

I headed to history class with the note in my hand. I began to read it.

The note:

I'm sorry. I never wanted to hurt you. I dreamt that when I did meet you, you wouldn't look at me like I was mental. You have to get to my locker before anyone does. Get all the envelopes. They will explain everything. I'm sorry I passed this burden down to you. It's so crazy how we fight for the truth when the truth is the one that crushes you more than any lie. I've searched for my brother all this time, and when I did find you, I couldn't even speak to you.
