Chapter Four
Kayla
The only thing I could hear was the tick-tock of the clock. That's how silent the room was.
Do you know how awkward it is to have a teacher stare at you for an hour? It's extremely awkward. Now add the dead silence. Yeah, it just got ten times more awkward.
That is why I was kicking pebbles with my foot as I walked home in more silence. Why silence? Because Jake was the last person I wanted to talk to.
Turns out we did get detention for being late. Jake is an extremely bad liar. The teacher didn't buy our 'Kayla got lost' story. Also, the class we went to next had a window that looked out to the courtyard. Just our luck right?
"Kayla, when will you talk to me?" Jake asked.
I kept my eyes on my shoes and kicked the pebbles again. He has been trying ever since we walked out of detention.
"Come on! It was one detention, it meant nothing." He tried again. This time I looked up at him.
"Really Jake? Because that's not how I remember it!" I yelled at him, "We have detention for the rest of the week. Plus, the teacher saw and heard everything. Give me one reason why I shouldn't be mad at you?"
He looked a little taken aback by my out burst. "Because-"
I cut him off before he could talk, "No. There isn't a reason why I shouldn't be mad at you!"
"Kayla, how many times do I have to say I'm sorry? It effects me just as much as it effects you!" Now he started to raise his voice too.
I stopped walking and stepped in front of him. "Sorry doesn't change anything!"
"Then what do you want me to do! Please tell me because I have no clue."
I groaned loudly and stomped away from him. What did I want from him? I don't know. I'm not being very fair either, but I won't just admit that. That's the last thing I would do.
Jake jogged and caught up to me. "See! You don't even know! There's nothing I can do except say I'm sorry. I mean it, I truly am sorry." When I didn't say anything he stepped closer and held my hands in his, "Come on Kayla, just forgive me already."
The way he looked at me made me melt. He was staring so intensely at me, he seemed so sincere. "I guess I forgive you."
Every feature on his face lit up. He released our hands and we continued to walk again. His arm got slung over my shoulder. It seems like he does that a lot lately. The only bad thing is that it throws me off, it can be a friendly gesture or a more than friendly one. My thoughts were made up as soon as he said, "That's my girl."

"Your home late. What happened?" Kyle asked looking at me weirdly. "Were you with Jake?" His eyebrows were wiggling when he said it causing me to roll my eyes.
"More like with Mr. Rainer." I replied grabbing the package of Oreo's from the pantry.
Kyle started laughing, "Detention? You're kidding me right?"
"Nope, I had detention." I popped an Oreo in my mouth. Wow Oreo's are the best cookies in the world. I could eat the whole package.
He leaned across the counter looking quite amused, "What did innocent little Kayla do to get detention?"
"I was late to class." I shrugged like it was no big deal. Kyle isn't getting the whole story. He's my brother, not my diary.
"And why were you late?" I swear he's worse than my mom sometimes.
