SAMANTHA
I remember before my twin sister, Amy, knew she had lung cancer and how she always told me to live like there's no tomorrow, but for her now, there really may not be a today.
Our adoption agency found Amy and me a new family because our parents gave us up at three years old. Both of us have the same strawberry blonde hair, blue eyes and rosy cheeks. Our new family, Kerrie and Ryan, came to take us to their house, but before, they decided to take us to dentist and doctor's office to make sure we were "okay" from being at the adoption agency so long. When we went to the dentist she said "Samantha, i'm sorry, you need braces." I picked the colors, and we left for the doctor's office.
The nurse took Amy and I back to get our weights and heights, Then she took us into a room and the doctor came right in. The doctor introduced herself as Dr. Waters. Next, checked our heart beats,I have always the braver twin so, I went first. Dr. Waters said my heart beat sounds normal and went on to check Amy's. When she checked Amy's, she said it sounded abnormal and Amy needed to go to the hospital to get a CT done right away.
When we arrived, I had to sit in the waiting room while everyone was with Amy. I was not allowed back in the room she was in, or I would be with her every step of the way. As I waited, I looked around the hospital and went to the gift shop to see if I thought Amy wanted anything there.
When she came back from her CT test she hugged me as tears were flowing from her eyes. I realized something was wrong. She said she had Adenocarcinoma, or lung cancer,I soon found out she was diagnosed with stage two . My heart stopped, I couldn't breathe. I hugged her and began to cry with her. I had a broken heart. It all had to sink in; my twin, my sister, my best friend had cancer; I couldn't do anything about it and we didn't know until now.
Then Dr.Waters talked to me. She said Amy needed to stay in the hospital so they could start treatment very soon. I gave her a balloon I found for her in the gift shop and walked with her to her room. When Amy got to her room, she went to sleep. I watched her so peacfuly before I soon was asleep laying next to her.
I woke to horrible noises, the mechine Amy was on was making. I ran to get a nurse as fast as I could. That was all I remembered before the nurses asked me to leave. I thought nothing could get worse, I was definitely wrong.
Dr.Waters aproached me steadily, she told me Amy was in a coma and her lung cancer may have it, but wasn't sure.
For the past three months I have spent every day and night at the hospital, hoping she would wake up. The doctors finally let me sleep in the open hospital bed next to hers', because I visited so much. If she woke up, I wanted to be the first person to see her and know she awoke.
I watched her on the bed, thinking about how I hated her disease and how I wished everything could go back to normal. But really, if we went back to normal, sooner or later it would result the same; Amy being hospitalized. Dr. Waters came in, and I received information that Amy needed a lung transplant very soon. She told me to start thinking about shutting her breathing machine down. At that moment I couldn't bare it anymore, I yelled at her, almost slapping her. I told her that was never an option. Immediately the waterworks began flowing. She told me the hospital wasn't expecting any donors soon, I was upset, I felt no one wanted to help Amy but me. Finally I calmed down, and Dr. Waters told me I was eligible to be her donor if I was thinking about it. I immediately said yes. I signed the paperwork and didn't think twice, I was going to be Amy's doner.
The Surgical doctors came and began getting me ready for the procedure. I kept reminding myself to do it for Amy, before I knew it, I did. I laid down on a cold, silver surgery table. The doctors gave me a shot, I fell asleep and never woke.
