It was finally the day I had confessed to her! She had not yet accepted my feelings, but she told me to meet her near the school gates after school. I'm so happy I could explode!
The names Nicholas Reid. A college sophomore. I'm taking criminology as my course. I grew up in a not so rich family but my parents did their hardest to support me and my younger sister, Colette who is currently in middle school. I wanted to repay our parents' kindness by helping them when I grow up as a successful engineer.
This "her" I was talking about is another college sophomore taking engineering as a course. I took a liking to her since our freshmen years, she ran into me by accident at lunch. She was the prettiest girl in our school, and most probably the smartest. We haven't talked much since our awkward meeting, but we were friends. Kind of.
Um, where was I? Oh, yes. Her name is Madeline Carter and she was perfect. From her glistening blue eyes to her straight, flowing ash blonde hair. And her smile...that was the most gorgeous smile I have ever encountered in my whole life. Uhm, ermc enough of that.Stuffing my books in my backpack, I headed outside my classroom to meet up with her. As I was nearing the school gates, I spotted her neatly braided hair dancing against the wind. I immediately approached her, smiling widely.
"Hey," I greeted. "Sorry if I kept you waiting."
"Oh, no. I just got here." She smiled gently. She always looked so mature.
"I see. So, uh, what did you want to talk about..?" I trailed off.
"I wanted to ask you if you would like to come over at my place for dinner. Is that okay with you?" She shifted a bit.
"Well, I wouldn't mind but what about your parents?" I chuckled, scratching the back of my head. "After all, I'm a few miles away from mine and I just live in an apartment alone..."
"My parents are gone for tonight so I'll have the house to myself!" She giggled.
"Sure." I grinned.
"Great! Uh, let's go!" She chimed and pulled my arm.
"Hey, wait! What about my stuff?" I panicked.
"You can put them down in my place, you'll just be over for dinner. And besides, my place isn't that far from the school."
I nodded slowly and just followed her along the streets.Upon arriving to her place, placed my shoes on their shoe rack and followed her through the corridors of her house.
We arrived somewhere that seemed like a dining room and she politely mentioned for me to sit down. I sat down on the nearest chair beside the table.
"Now, please wait here while I cook dinner." She smiled as she headed to the kitchen.Something felt off in her place. It's like she didn't want me to know anything. I waited for a couple of minutes to pass before finally standing up and investigating the place.
I saw a trash bin that seemed empty, but being the weird person I am, I checked under it with no reason at all. And to my surprise, I found a ripped piece of paper. It looked like it was torn from a journal."For the respectful guests"
Guests? I thought for a bit before mindlessly heading to where their shoe rack was supposed to be. After staring at it, I thought it was pointless and that she missed a spot while cleaning. But as I turned to walk away, I saw a piece of paper sticking out from a small hole in the wall. Another note.
Opening it up and reading it, it said,"For the hungry guests"
And immediately, I knew exactly where it was. I headed to the kitchen seeing Madeline very busy with the food.
"Hey, Madeline." I greeted with a sheepish smile.
"Oh, hey, Nicholas! Don't worry, dinner will be ready in a few minutes!" She chimed.
"Alright, I just wanted to check if you were still doing fin here." I joked and she giggled.
"Don't worry about me, I'll be fine!" She finally said before turning back to she stove.
I quietly examine the fridge for notes and saw none. I was on the verge of giving up when I saw one sticking out from behind it. I immediately pulled it out and rushed out of the kitchen. And opening, it read,"For things to be stored"
Now, where would we store things? Warehouses? Rooms? Basement? Wait...attic! That's it!
"Attic...attic...attic..." I repeated as I looked for an entrance to the attic. Until, there it was. A rope connecting to the stairs for the attic.
I trudged towards it as I forcefully pulled it down revealing a dirty set if stairs. I hesitated before going up to see what it has to store. Their attic was quite big and dark, it'll be impossible to find that note in time for dinner. But luckily, there was a flashlight right next to the entrance of the attic, it seems to be working.
Shining the flashlight in front of me, I entered the attic fully and started roaming around. I saw old music boxes, dolls, suitcases, and boxes. I turned around and saw a mannequin holding something that seemed to be a note. Stalking towards it, I pulled the note and opened it. It read,"For a great meal before bedtime"
This was definitely one of the things I know; the dining table. I carefully put the stairs back and headed for the dining room to look for another note or so, but unluckily, Madeline had gotten out of the kitchen just as I walked into the dining room.
"Hey, Nicholas! Sorry to keep you waiting, here you go!" She placed a few plates and trays on the table.
"Wow, these look delicious!" I laughed.
"I'm glad you think so. My mom went extra strict to me when teaching me how to cook!" She laughed along. After dinner, I helped Madeline wash the dishes before bidding goodbye to her and picking up my stuff and putting on my shoes before leaving the house.
"Man, what are these weird notes about anyway?" I grumbled, frustrated that I did not get to finish my little investigation. The notes that lead to misfortune...
