"Meir," I kneel by his side. His hand lies by his side, I grasp it, the blood making it slippery, "Oh, Meir,"
Lepus taps my shoulder. He's laid the sleeping bag on the floor next to the mangled mess that is Meir.
" We need to get him to the river, we'll wash him off.
Then we can assess his wounds, so we can treat them," I nod in response.
"Wait," Gasps Meir, " The weapons," He points a weak arm at a nearby tree. " I put...in there...before I fell"
"We'll come back for them," I reassure him. Then with a look at Lepus we lift him onto the bag.It hurts him, a lot. He screams and I almost drop him, spinning around, expecting assailants to materialise. They don't, luckily, but we can't risk it again. I crouch down, and stroke his head.
"Meir," I say gently like he's a wild horse that I don't want to spook," Meir, I know it hurts, and I hate hurting you, but we have to carry you back to the river, and the medical kit. Do you think you can stay quiet the whole way there? Because if we get attacked right now, well, it's not gonna end well,"I see tears steaming down Meir's face. He shakes his head. I can't leave him though. I look at Lepus for help. He told off his jacket and holds it in front of Meir's mouth.
" Bite down on this. Instead of screaming." Then he gets back up, makes contact with me, and together we lift our injured ally. I get the feeling him and Meir arent exactly the best of friends.
The river isnt far away, maybe ten metres from where we found Meir, but it's the longest 10 metres I will ever walk.
It's hard, walking along to a soundtrack of crushed leaves and muffled sobs. The first couple of metres are ok, but then the weight takes it's toll and my arms begin to burn. But I soldier on; I know that what ever pain I feel is a pinprick compared to Meir's current torture.
After an eternity we reach the river bank. It takes a lot of will to lower him instead of just dropping the bag. But we are here now, and can start to cure Meir.
I send Lepus back to get the bags and weapons. I look at Meir, who looks back, reassuring me. I decide to gently push him into the water since it's so still here. He slides in without too much trouble. Clouds of blood float away, dyeing the water scarlet. As the gently stream washes off the blood I can see the cuts more clearly. They aren't deep, fortunately, though they will need a bandage and, if we can afford it, he needs a few days rest. He's lost a lot of blood though, through the slashes on his arms and legs. Thankfully despite the crimson drain on his jacket he hasn't got any wounds on his chest. He just leant against the blood.
I help Meir out of the stream, he's more mobile now he is clear of the sticky blood, but he still leans heavily against me.
" I love you," he murmers.
" And I, you," I respond. He looks confused for a second, it wasn't simple enough for his blood-lacking brain to comprehend. I laugh a bit myself, it's weird seeing him so helpless.I sit him on the sleeping bag as Lepus comes back with the equipment Meir fought for. There are three black backpacks, a water bottle, Bread, two swords for him, a string of darts that Lepus immediately claims and some spears, for me I guess. They are almost knives, I can't afford to be picky, anyhow. There are more important things to do that search the backpacks right now, but during the search for some extra cloth for bandages, I find enough sleeping bags for all of us, and three more medical kits.
I treat Meir and give him a painkiller, incase we need to run or anything happens. Then I begin to make a meal from our pitiful rations. Night is fast approaching and we need a proper camp. I send Lepus to check the area for anything that might endanger us.
It's barley been give minutes when he comes crashing through the trees towards us.
" We need to go! Now!!"
