Under Edd's Hat

"Hey, I scored some Edibles. Don't give me that look! Maybe it will help your appetite. Get ready, you don't have a choice. I already sent him a text. We're going!"
    Double D begrudgingly held out his hands for the Marijuana infused jolly ranchers. He popped one into his mouth and tried to savor the taste. He noted it was watermelon, his favorite. He would save the other for later.
Edd felt himself to slowly relax, feeling relief of the earlier tension.
"Get dressed Sockhead.  Why don't you wear some color today? I got you a new hat. It's felt on the inside. Nice and cozy for that noggin of yours.  Take a shower first. You stink!"
Edd rolled his eyes and headed to their personal bathroom. They were lucky and got into the new dorms upon request from his parents. Their generous donations to that college helped persuade them, he was sure.
    Edd stripped down to nothing and stared into the full length mirror hanging on the door.  He felt almost ashamed. "This will pass soon. I'll be attractive again one day." He thought to himself. But when? Soon? No. NO. He wouldn't travel down that trail of thought. Not today. He will have a good time, even if he must force himself. He carefully scrubbed himself with body wash, scented like lavender. It relaxed him and reminded him of better days. He didn't care if it smelled a little feminine.  A few more minutes of the hot water pouring on his nody and he decided it was enough. He dried himself off and wrapped the towel around his waist. When he walked into the door, a note was on Edd's bed.

Hey Sockhead, something came up. You'll have to go to dinner with Kevin By yourself. No point in Cancelling, he will be there at 7:00. Whoops. Get all fancy. Strut your stuff. -Eddy

Edd sighed. He should have predicted that Eddy would come up with this to get him out of his comfort zone. Always scheming. He gently picked up his new hat. The inside was felt, and the outside was knitted in a beautiful array of red and greens. Perfect for this time of year. He threw open the door to his wardrobe and pondered on what to wear. He chose dark, boot cut jeans that hugged his thighs, a Red V neck shirt over a black long sleeved thermal, and his favorite red hoodie with an oversized hood lined with fur. As he slid on his jeans, he noticed the once snug pants hung low on his hips enough to show the waistband of his boxers. "I'm going to look ridiculous. I need to invest in a belt." But as he looked in the mirror, it some how suited him. He thought he looked... Sassy.
He put on the rest of his ensemble and lastly, his hat. Pulling it down so it was just above his eyes. Edd looked at the clock and noted it was 6:55. "Kevin should arrive soon. Or maybe he will be late? I wouldn't be surprise-" His thoughts were cut short to 3 brisk knocks on the door.
"K-Kevin! Y'you're a tad bit early! I will be right there." He hurriedly did a once-over his room to make sure it was immaculate before he opened the door. Which, of course, it was.
"Heyya D. Ready?  It's a little chilly so I called an Uber. Hope that's ok. Don't worry, I brought these wipes so you can clean the seat before you sit. I know how you are."
"Th-that was really... um.. Sweet, Kevin. I will make sure your kind gesture won't go to waste."
Edd gazed up into the eyes that make his heart stop and gave a sincere smile. His long-time crush often took up thoughts that weren't absorbed with studying and Edd's friends. Kevin always seemed out of reach. They never had a discussion about eachothers sexuality. They've only become more than acquaintances when they started college. Pleased to see a familiar face from a small town they slowly became friends. Edd wished they would have become more close on High School, but they just ran in different circles. A head nod there, a chat here. Edd would help with one of Kevin's classes every once in a while, but that was mainly it. When they all went into 9th grade they all marched to a beat of their own drum.
Edd realized he was lost in his train of thought when he hit a spot of black ice on the sidewalk and felt himself tumble to the concrete. Kevin quickly braced his arm underneath Edd's shoulders and the other on the snall of his back. Edd's breath hitched as he looked up at Kevins Face. His eyes were hooded and his lower lip almost stuck out into a pout. "I gotchya, Eddward." Kevin whispered. Edd wanted those words to have a whole other meaning.
    "I know." Edd swore he could feel almost a spark. He reached up to-
*HONK*

"Hello my dears. I believe you Must be Kevin? Sorry for the rush, it's a Friday. I try to have a life. But, extra cash is the way to go. Where to?"
    Edd stumbled out of Kevins arms and reached for the Red Chevy Cobalts door handle. "This is a very sensible vehicle! And you do such a well job of taking care of it."
"It is a her. And her name is Rose. She is my doting companion. Clean freak, Huh?  Gotta whipe down her seats. Don't ruin them. I'll cut you."
Edd's eyes widened as he looked at the driver. She looked sane enough. Kevin pushed Edd all the way in and closed the door and walked over to get in on the other side.
       "Let's  go to that Diner on 22nd. I heard they make killer grilled cheese."
      Edd was actually excited to eat for once. He loved that Diner. Eddy and him used to go there at least once a week. Wait. Eddy.
   "Seems like an odd place to choose, Kevin. It's a little out of they way. Wherever did you hear about this Diner?" Edd asked innocently.
   "Shut up you hipster. Why is it so hard to believe other people like to explore different places?  You like being Unique? With your fancy boots and your hat."
   Edd rolled his eyes and looked out the window. Kevin saw his chance and reached for Edd's hat. Edd felt Kevins fingers brush against the fabric just in time to catch Kevin's wrist in a death grip. "Don't, Kevin."
   Kevin smiled teasingly and continued to pull at the fabric.
    "Don't you imbecile. If you think for a second that we're children again and you think you can treat me like one, you better snap back into reality and smell the roses before I put that same color as that flower on your cheek with the back of my hand."
   "Gosh, Edd. I was only messing around. I'm sorry I pushed you a little too far. Hey, we're here. Lets calm down." He paid for the ride and they went inside. Edd was embarrassed about his little outburst, but He had good reasoning. Neither him or Kevin were ready. Edd wanted to pretend for a little longer.
   Then it dawned on Edd. That's exactly what he would do.
