Summer Love

By Casey Narzem

(Amanda’s POV)

“Finally, freshman year is over!” My friend, McKenzie, screamed as we left the school. “What’re you doing this summer?”

“My dad is sending me to spend the entire summer in this place in England with my aunt. Wolverhampton, I think? Yea that’s the place.” I responded smiling.

“Amanda, you’re leaving me for the whole summer by myself?!” I winced slightly at the volume of her voice.

“I’m leaving next week and I’m coming back August 31st and then school starts the 2nd. We’ll still have time to hang out. Don’t worry. So what are you doing this summer?”

“Amanda, honey, wake up. You need to get ready to go to the airport. “My dad woke me up. I groaned. “Come on, you’ll have fun this summer.”

“Dad, what time is it?” I sat up and rubbed the sleep out of my eyes.

“5:30 in the morning.”

“Ugh, that’s too early!” Dad just laughed at me.

“Come on lazy bones, Andrea is really excited to see you again.” I stood up from my bed and went to the closet.

“I’m excited too, but why couldn’t she just come to Chicago?”

“She has something called a job, and I do too so that's why I can't go with you." I laughed at his response.

"I totally didn't know." I said sarcastically.  "Dad, can you go now? I need to get ready."

"Oh sorry." He scrambled out of the room. I got dressed in a comfy outfit for the flight then brushed my teeth and did my hair.

In the mirror I had seen a girl I could hardly recognize. The girl had blonde hair with blue dyed tips and dull green eyes with dark circles underneath from lack of sleep. On the plane I definitely had needed to sleep. The image I saw was definitely me though, sadly.

I dragged my baggage down the stairs to my dad, who sat in the kitchen. I quickly buttered a bagel while Dad took my bags to his car.

“Amanda let’s go! You don’t wanna be late for your flight.” Dad called.

"Ok dad!" I grabbed my phone and its charger from the socket in the kitchen and ran to the car.

About an hour later and one long heartfelt speech from dad about how much he would miss me, making sure to stay safe, and a short lecture on making sure to stay in contact with him, I sat at my gate waiting for boarding. There was no words being said, but the clicking of shoes, and buttons were louder than the words would've been anyway.

Soon enough people had started boarding and I followed in their path. I handed over my ticket to the woman collecting the tickets, and with a warm smile, she let me past to get on the plane.

During the eight hour flight, I spent most of it sleeping and the rest reading while listening to music. Either way I was bored out of my mind. The landing was bumpy, unpleasant, and it made me want to vomit. In best terms, it was one of the worst flights ever.

I made my way to the baggage claim area to grab my luggage. My eyes were trained on the carousel that kept spinning round and round covered with bags. A tall woman with reddish-blonde hair waved and screamed toward me. I chuckled at the woman, who if I hadn't known her as my aunt Andrea I would've thought she was a crazy woman.

She pulled me into a tight hug with a huge smile on her face. "Hey Amanda!" I laughed at her perky attitude.

"Hey Aunt Andrea." I pulled back from the embrace and quickly grabbed my bags. "Thank you for having me this summer." Andy started leading me to her car.
