"Wake up!" I heard my cell mate say. "All the guards," he stuttered "they, they all just disappeared!"

I rubbed my eyes and stared up at him, "what do you mean they 'disappeared'?"

"They are gone!"

I sat up and stared at his face for a while. He didn't seem happy we could escape, he seemed frightened. "All of them?"

His voice started shaking, "YES all of them are GONE!"

I quickly got up and rushed to our cell door. I gave the door a small push and it swung open. I walked outside leaving my cell mate back in our cell as I walk around. All the other prisoners seemed unusually quiet. It seems I had been the last one to know about the guards' disappearance. I started to walk towards the front door.

"Don't do it don't go!" I heard someone cry out with a shaky voice behind me. "It's too dangerous out there!"

"What do you mean? The guards are gone its not dangerous," I turned around and said to the weeping lady behind me.

"Its more dangerous out there. The world we once knew is gone, destroyed, no trace left of it. There is no safe place outside of here. No safe place." The woman began to weep.

"Ma'am it can't be much worse than in here. The prison food, the gross toilets, the cold damp prison cells that reek of mold and mildew."

"Don't do it. Don't do it."

I handed her a piece of cloth to dry her tears. "I'm sorry." I continued my walk to the front door.

On my journey to the front door, the main hall didn't smell like usual sweat, prison food, and feces. Instead, it smelt like cleaning products and scrambled eggs. I noticed someone had been cleaning the halls and empty cells. The prison was looking cleaner than ever.

On my journey to the front door, the main hall didn't smell like usual sweat, prison food, and feces. Instead, it smelt like cleaning products and scrambled eggs. I noticed someone had been cleaning the halls and empty cells. The prison was looking cleaner than ever.

I had finally reached the door. What I saw I couldn't believe. All the other prisoners were gathered at the door, completely silent. Just staring at the doorknob. I thought about being the first to leave but a wave of fear rushed over me. I've been here so long it's like my new home and these prisoners are like my family. I tried to move towards the door but my feet were glued to the floor. 'What if that lady was right? What if it would be better to stay here? What if something happens here and I'm not able to help?

What if there is something big out there, bigger than anything you've ever imagined? Strong enough to kill you in one look? Smart enough to know your every move before you make it? What if everyone else outside these walls hates you? Doesn't care? Doesn't want you?'

These are the thoughts ran through my head, and must've been what the other prisoners were thinking. And so I stayed. I stayed here in this prison with no guards. Locked away safely with my new family, in my new life. The guards disappeared years ago, but I still think about returning to society, and then I remember how terrifying it would be.
