The Story of Us
C Chapter Four:
The next couple of days in detention had not gone so well. Edward would not budge on the situation. He got even firm when he finally realized I was committed to figuring out his secret.
It was the first day of the second week and we were on the last room, 23, and half way done the boards. The teacher had just stepped out to do some photocopying and once again I gave it a try to break the thick walls that Edward so guarded often.
“We’re on our last week, huh.” I say. “Aren’t you glad.”
Edward does not turn his head towards me but still answers me. “Yeah, I guess.”
I give a small laugh. “I am.”
He sighs and soaks the cloth squeezing the water and began to wipe the boards. “What do you want, Bella?”
“I just want to know why you act this way? Why you said you have to.”
“It’s none of you business!" He yelled.
I bit my lip. “Because. You always act so mean to the class. I want to know why. There had to be a reason.”
He grunted.
The rest of the time spent in that classroom was unmistakably harsh. Silence filled the small area. The teacher came back not long after and a conversation was futile. I wasn’t going to give up though.
We waited at the front hall together. Edward was angry I could tell. His eye and lips were debating and fingers fighting with each other. He got up three or four times pacing the halls with a frustrated glare.
The finally he stopped and looked at me. A horned honked. Edward turned to the direction in which it came from then turned back his lips parting for a moment then closed and parted again. “I have to go.”
I watched him go and drive off in the black GMC truck. Spotting my mother car as well I got up and headed towards her.
As I opened the door of the back seat she said, “Your father’s coming home.”
A smile touches my lips. “Really? I thought he said he didn’t know when he was going to be back.”
“Well.” Her reply didn’t say much and I knew instantly she was hiding something from me.
“Is he staying or going back?” I asked.
Renée let out a long sigh. “He’s staying for 18 months, at least.”
My father, Charlie, worked for the U.S Military air force. There had been a massive exposure to Pure mercury liquidized (also called quicksilver) in Shenyang and that had cause serious health problems to the citizens of China. Many had died so now the United States government and the Canadian government stepped in to help. This of course included my father to carry exposed bodies of helpless people to hospitals in Beijing, Dalian or Haerbin. I hadn’t seen him for a year because of this. Once I even thought he was never coming back.
Excitement filled me that whole evening at the thought of seeing my dad again.

Friday came much quicker than I had expected. Soon enough I sat at the door step of our house around six o’clock waiting eagerly for Charlie. Six o’clock soon became seven o’clock and seven eight. My mother came out at around eight thirty shaking her head.
“I’m sorry, sweet heart.” She said. “Daddy called saying he can’t get back until next month.”
Hot tears streamed down my eyes. Disappointment and anger filled me. “Com inside.” Renée whispered.
I swallowed hard and got up shuddering at the cold temperature of the night. I went straight to bed my eyes puffy and red. Staring into the darkness of my room I knew that Charlie wasn’t coming back. I don’t know how and why but the secretiveness that my mother showed gave me that feeling.
That night I slept unsteadily. Nightmares crept up in places they did not belong.
But you held your pride like you should have held me
Oh, we're scared to see the ending
Why are we pretending this is nothing?
I'd tell you I miss you but I don't know how
I've never heard silence quite this loud
