At Your Mercy - An Insight

Initially, I had put up a description that managed to tell the whole outline of the plot. But reading over it afterwards, I found that it was too complicated to understand for someone who isn't aware of what the story is based around, which is why I changed the description from a lengthy elucidation to a short and sweet remnant, that enables everyone to grasp it generally.

The thing is, the main nature of what Raven (who's our main character) actually does doesn't make an appearance until we meet Jason, so the first few chapters might be confusing to understand. Hence, I decided to start this by giving a general insight into what is happening so you delve in with some background information.

Soracia and Ethova are two rival countries, bordering each other, who make it their main purpose to destroy the other every chance they get, besides keeping the running of their own country efficient. The story takes place in Soracia, which is Raven's birthplace, and Soracia's government system has three tiers:

1) An establishment agency: This is a secret group of five people who head and lead every decision that the country takes. This agency stays under covers, the people who are residing in the country themselves don't even know that they have something called an establishment agency. Raven, Patrick, Sloane and Erik have been Soracia's foundation since five years (Marshall has been in it longer than that). They blend in with normal people, because no one knows about them, but they also make choices that could make or break a country's future.

2) The intelligence agencies and the military: These include three intelligence agencies, and the navy, army and air force. They hold a position higher than the mere government everyone knows about, so they answer directly to the establishment agency. This does NOT include the police.

3) The managerial government: This includes all the law, and the democracy, and the political parties (which I will not touch the details of, because it isn't there in the story line). Basically, it includes the government you all know about. This includes the police as well.

Ethova's system of government is not clear in the story, the only solid fact is that Ethova has an establishment agency as well.

Before our story takes place, it is important for everyone to know that Ethova has, in the past, killed four of Soracia's establishment agency members (one in Raven's lifetime). The story starts when Ethova kills one more (Marshall), who has been in service for 10 years, and our characters need someone to replace him fast. These four do not seem fazed by his death because they weren't close with him on a personal level, as Marshall was a senior and took the policy of no emotional involvement with a job that required more logic too seriously. Marshall has taught and trained them all to keep a lid on the interaction between themselves as well, but as Sloane and Raven have been together from the start, Patrick and Raven are best friends, and Erik is the nice guy everyone likes, they've always stuck together.

The replacement of Marshall is where Jason Carter comes in, and that's how the story evolves.

Many of you will be taken aback by the fact that Raven is 24, and leading a country, and Jason and the other three aren't that old either. There is a solid reason for it; this story is based in an alternate universe, so don't try to confuse yourself with how it works over here. The education system in our story is different. They do not start you from the beginning, and then work over to more complex, like they do over here. In the story, after seven years of basic education starting from age six, you choose the profession you want to go into, and till eighteen, you are taught within the institution you choose. Like, if for example, you choose your profession as a doctor, you will be put in a real hospital to gain the practical experience as well as the education. The specialized education has no time limit. It is up to you to take as much years as you want to start working professionally. The gifted ones, who are very rare, take about 4 years. Our Raven was a professional at 18. You'll come to know how she came to rule the country as you progress.

I hope I tied up all the loose ends. If you still have any queries, I'll be happy to explain.

Cheers.

(Picture in the media was supposed to be the original book cover but the orientation was out. Kudos to my sister for working on this as well as what the cover is now.)
