Today was a very special day for Carlie. Today, May 20, 2012, would be her fourteenth birthday. She woke up for school, excited that there were only three days of it left. She went into her closet and put some comfy clothes on her slim body. She didn't feel like dressing up today. She threw her hair up in a messy bun and ran down the stairs, almost tripping. The smell of syrup drifted throughout the house.
"Woah slow down there!" Her dad said, pulling her into an embrace. Her mom walked over.
"Happy birthday!" she said and joined the hug.
"Thanks!" Carlie replied. Her little nine year old sister Mikayla stumbled down the stairs, groggy from sleep.
"Mikayla, it's your sister's birthday. What do you say to her?" Her dad said, nudging the little girl.
"Cool." Mikayla said.
Her mom rolled her eyes. "She loves you. She just wants to be older like you." She leaned and whispered to Carlie.
"I know." Carlie said with a smile. She walked over to her sister and ruffed up her hair playfully. Her sister groaned, unamused. "What's for breakfast?"
"Your favorite! Blueberry pancakes!" Her dad said, pouring some batter on to a pan.
"Yay! When will it be ready?!"
"In a couple minutes. Why don't you go finish getting ready?" Her dad flipped a pancake.
She walked up the stairs and went to her room. She grabbed her iPhone and unlocked it. She got a text from her friend Celine. It read, "Happy birthday to my best friend in the world! I am so happy you are my friend and I can't wait to see you at school! I have a surprise for you;)" Carlie smiled at the text. She replied,"Thanks:) I can't wait!"
Breakfast was ready so she went back downstairs.
When she walked downstairs, she saw balloons and several wrapped boxes on the table. "Presents!" She exclaimed.
"Yup! Go ahead and open them real quick." Her mom said. She started with the first one, a smaller box with a purple ribbon on it. It was a pair of Uggs boots.
"Cute!" She said, opening the next one. It some clothes, made for probably fall or winter. "I love it!"
The next one was big. It was a suitcase, one of those hard ones. It was purple, her favorite color. "Thanks!" She said gratefully, but wondering what was up with the weird gift. The next one was some head phones, Beats by Dre. And next was some junk food, and then some more clothes, and one more pair of shoes. "Thank you guys so much!" She hugged her parents.
They had a wide grin their face. The whole family had taken a trip up to Colorado, and in the middle of the woods, discovered this house for sale. It was gorgeous from the outside. Big. Mansion-like. Carlie loved it. "Where should we take this stuff?" Her dad asked.
"Vacation?"
"No."
"Then where?" She took a minute to think. She gasped. "The house in Colorado!"
Her parents grinned. She hugged them and thanked them as they told her that they would move on the day after the last day of school. She finished her breakfast and ran to the bus stop. As the bus arrived, she inhaled deeply and breathed in the scent of late spring.
She stepped onto the bus and was startled we everyone on the bus sang happy birthday to her as she walked to her seat. She was that girl. The one who was friends with everyone. The jocks. The nerds. The outcasts. The goths. The Jesus freaks. People talked to her on the way to school. She felt wanted and it made her feel great.
At school she saw Celine. They ran up to each other and hugged, even though they seen each other a couple days ago. Celine handed Carlie the bag she had in her hand.
"Aw! Thanks!" Carlie said, smiling.
"Open it." Celine said mischievously. Carlie carefully pulled the green tissue paper out of the blue bag. There was a large, rolled up, poster. She took it out and unrolled it. It was a poster of Eddie Redmayne, her biggest celebrity crush.
"Thanks! I love it!" She said, as she inspected the poster more carefully. She saw some scribbles on it. She soon realized it was Eddie's signature. She squealed with delight. "Thank you thank you thank you!" Her face turned crimson as she inspected Mr. Redmayne's signature. She was so happy. The rest of the day, she got a lot of attention from everyone. She was used to it, but it made her feel special. When she got home, she had her favorite dinner, watched some tv, and went to bed. She had a great day.
