CHAPTER 1
As I walk down the hall the bell rings. "Time for class with the she-witch." says my best friend Anna. "Shhh, she has ears like a hawk." I tell Anna "Payton all you have to do is ignore every single thing she says no matter how beastly it can be." Anna says.
Her real name is Allison Fokker. We used to be the best of friends until.... Well I don't really remember what had happened. All I can recall is that it occurred around the second grade. Now that we're sophomore's, high school has gotten to her. "Here she comes." says Tori one of my best friends.
"Hi Payton, and whoever they are."Allison says referring to Anna and Tori. Before Allison can say anything else Tori interrupts, "It's Tori and Anna." "Yeah, whatever." She says rudely. "Anyways how are you doing lately we haven't talked in a long time." Allison says in a sweet and innocent way. "Two things: First of all since when did we become so close and second of all since when do you care how I'm doing?" I say to her trying to make my point. "Since we were friends and-"I stop her in shock. "Wait a second we are not and never will be friends. Remember you made that decision in the second grade. "Wow I actually can't be nice to you for another minuet." she says with a disgusted look on her face. "There's the Allison we know and don't love." I say as we turn to walk in to the auditorium.
Before we fully turn away Allison starts up another conversation. "So, you all know who's going to win the Write across America contest?" she asked. The Write across America contest is where you have to write a children's story book for the orphanage in California. You get to go to there for two weeks and read it to the children every Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday. Everyone knows that the only reason Allison signed up is not to read to the children but to tan, shop, and tan again. Not that I'm complaining though. Two weeks away from her sounds like a dream come true. "You know that you have to read to the children right?" I tell Allison assuming she doesn't realize that already. "Of course I know that," she says.
My other friend Rachel walks over with an anxious look on her face. "If anyone should win here it's Payton." Rachel says. "Well we'll see about that." Allison says in a snotty rude tone. As soon as her two friends Grace and Ashley get here they all walk into the auditorium pushing us aside. "Someone needs to teach that she-witch a lesson." Anna says.
"Look, Rachel I appreciate you standing up for me but I can fight my own battles, and I don't even think I should win. There are so many other people who deserve this way more than i do. "But your book was so good!" Rachel says. "Thanks but I just don't think so." I tell her. Rachel has nothing more to say, so on that note we start walking towards the auditorium. We take a seat as Mrs. Smith the principal starts talking.
"Okay everyone quiet down." she starts out. "Everyone did a fantastic job with their books. We got over 450 submissions! The staff and I enjoyed reading every single one of them. We had a very difficult time only picking one. But of course they had to. So without further ado I present to you the winner of this year's Write Across America contest: Mark Evans!" the principal finishes. "Mark Evans!" Allison stands up yelling in confusion.
"Mark, that's Aden's brother!" Anna yells at me. Aden is this guy I've liked ever since the third grade and Anna and Rachel keep bugging me about it. "So?" I say acting as if I don't care. "We all know you care." Rachel says with a smirk upon her face. "You guys I seriously don't care. That's great for
Mark." I say convincingly.
“Now please return to your usual classes.” Mrs. Smith says as we walk out of the auditorium. “I’ll see you guys at lunch.” I say to Anna, Tori and Rachel. “Bye Payton.” They all say in unison.
