Chapter 1: Keep On Walking

It seemed like I'd been walking forever...

After finally escaping my abusive parents two years ago, I'd only stopped walking when absolutely necessary; for eating and sleeping mostly.

I had survived by travelling and relying on the kindness of others, as most people would pity a young homeless girl...

Surprisingly, I had been smart enough to last this long.

But then I saw it from my raised position... The millions of twinkling lights of the capital of England. I had finally made it to London.

"Let's just hope I can find somewhere to stay.." I murmured to myself.

I walked further into the capital city, careful to avoid all of the worst places and finally came to a hostel of some sorts...

A wall of heat hit me as I stepped into the building and came face to face with a tall, haggard man, "Hello. Can I help you?" he sneered in a nasal voice.

"I... Uhm. I--"

"Out with it girl! I don't have all day!" he barked, making me jump backwards.

I'd always had trouble speaking to people ever since I was young. But I suppose that wasn't surprising considering my parents used to beat me for talking...

Taking a deep breath I stared past the man, "I... Would like a room f-for the night." I stammered, my voice barely a whisper.

"Well tough luck girl." he spat angrily, "I don't have no room for you to stay in."

I nodded once and hurriedly escaped the building, leaving the horrid man behind... There was always certain people who would instantly hate me for some reason, seemingly for no reason.

But I knew why... The same reason my parents used to beat me. My appearance changed often, depending on my mood and this seemed to make people angry...

With a sigh I curled up underneath a thick hedge, "Guess I'll sleep here then." I sniffed as tears began rolling down my cheeks.

As I cried I tried to picture my perfect life; a loving mother and father, a cosy little house where in the country where I'd go running with my dog through the fields that surrounded it... And when I'd come home my mother would have a beautifully prepared meal already placed on the table, the warm glow of the fire casting our faces in orange as we chatted about our days.

That was my greatest dream... To feel truly loved.

"What're we gonna do wi' 'er Professor? She can't possibleh come back teh Hogwarts..." a deep, heavily accented voice reasoned.

There was a moment of silence, "We have to take her back Hagrid. Severus must deal with the consequences of his actions." a different, more authoritative voice said.

After another lapse in silence I felt large hands take hold of me... And by large I meant massive! The owner of these hands could easily crush me if he wanted to, his palms probably wider than my waist...

This fact made my eyes snap open just as I was lifted higher than I'd ever want to be. I hated heights with a passion.

"Put me down! Please! Let go!" I screamed, kicking my legs around feebly.

I hadn't eaten in days and I had no energy to fight back anymore...

"Sshhhh..." the man soothed as he placed me gently back on my feet, "I won' hurt ye."

Looking upwards I gasped when my eyes met his. He was a giant... Quite literally.

He was wearing what looked like the giants equivalent to gardening gear, with a long red umbrella tucked into his belt. The giant had an unruly beard which almost hid his jolly smile and rosy-red cheeks.

"Wh-who are y-you??" I stuttered as I wrapped my arms around me, attempting to make myself as small as possible.

"Im Hagrid!" the giant boomed, making me wince, "Grounds keeper at Hogwarts school of wi--"

"Hagrid, that's enough." the more authoritative voice from before cautioned.

This made the huge man go silent immediately, and made me turn around to see a kindly-looking old man...

His snow white hair and beard were even longer than mine (and thats saying something). He was wearing a magnificent blue cloak which hung past his feet, and half-moon spectacles that framed his light blue eyes.

When he finally caught my gaze he smiled warmly at me, "Hello Lily... I'm Albus Dumbledore." he informed me, his tone now soft.

To be honest, the way he spoke to me was how you would speak to a wild animal you were scared of startling...

"Why are you both here?" I asked quietly, "What do you want from me??"

Albus Dumbledore shook his head gently, "We want nothing from you Lily... We want to help you." he assured me calmly.

"Help me how? How do you know my name?!"

Everything this man was saying put me on edge... No one ever usually spoke to me much, let alone want to help. And the fact that he knew my name was sure to mean he wanted to take me back to those monsters I used to call parents...

He seemed to deliberate what he should say before leaning a little closer to me, "Lily, have you ever... done something you couldn't explain? That you knew was completely impossible?"

A memory instantly flooded my vision... My first day of primary school. Everything had been going great until a boy decided to start bullying me.

He ended up hanging twenty foot up in the air on a tree branch...

"Yes... But wh-what has that got to do with anything?" I questioned, sighing inwardly when I stammered again.

I'd remembered that day and what had followed; endless beatings from my parents for being a freak of nature. An anomaly.

Safe to say they never let me go back...

Hagrid pulled something out of his massive pocket, "Time teh go Professor." he said gruffly.

Dumbledore waved off Hagrid's words, instead lowering himself to my height so he could look deep into my eyes. Then he uttered four words that would change my life forever...

"Your a witch Lily."
