“Verona…Verona…” A cold whisper forced her to open her green eyes. As soon as she saw the nurse, she knew it was about time. She got up from her bed and began to collect her stuff, ready to leave the hospital. The door of her hospital room was a bit open and she finally saw her mother again. As she packed her things, she overheard her mother talking to a doctor.
“Are you excited Mrs. Carter?”
“Yes…No, I’m fine. She…she hasn’t spoken yet, right?” Her voice was uncertain. The man in white next to her let out a sigh.
“I’m afraid, I don’t have any good news for you. She didn’t say a word since the last time you were here.”
“I hope our new home will be healthy for her” The conversation was interrupted by the creak of the door.
"Ronnie!" Mrs. Carter ran to her and hugged her. She tried to ignore the tears, pinching in the back of her eyes. Her daughter was finally back and after 6 months she can take her back home again. "How are you sweetheart?" She looked straight in her daughter’s green eyes with hope. Nothing. Verona simply shrugged. Not a word. After half a year, she was still silent. "You know, Charlie can not wait to see you again," Mrs. Carter smiled. Ronnie nodded before she hung her back over her shoulder and made her way out. Her mother sighed and said goodbye to the doctor, before she followed her daughter. Ronnie didn’t turn around, not even once and went to the black Mercedes in the parking lot. After 6 months, this place was still unfamiliar. Mrs. Carter, however, did turn around with hope that she will never have to return to this place. She walked over to her car where Ronnie was already sitting in the backseat. She placed herself in the drivers seat, put the key in the ignition and drove off.
"You know, I think Charlie has found a couple of friends. Too bad we’re moving" Ronnie responded immediately and looked at her mother with a puzzled expression. "Yes, you heard right, we're moving. Oh, honey, you'll love Kitsault! It’s so different from Stratford… and who knows, maybe you’ll be feeling better there.” Verona leaned back in her seat and closed her eyes. Mrs. Carter was the kind of person, who is always trying to run away from their problems.
She hated talking about what happened. And that was how it should be, because Ronnie would not listen to her anyway. She has changed, she’ll never be the same. After 20 minutes the car stopped next to a small house. Ronnie stuck her head out the window and saw how the front door opened, a guy came out of the house. He was a little older and a little taller than her. He had light hair and pale skin just like his little sister. He approached the car with a huge smile from ear to ear. Ronnie opened the door and got out of the car.
“ So, if that’s not my little sister Verona.” Ronnie grinned and licked her lips “Still silent?”
"Leave your sister alone, Charlie, she is having a hard time." Mrs. Carter hissed. She closed the door of her car and went into the house. Leaning down, Charlie spoke quietly as if he was telling a secret.
“Have you heard that we are moving to this spooky town? Mom thinks it will be good for you. But no one asked me, as usual.” Verona shrugged apologetically and looked away, biting her lip. “Hey, I know it’s not your fault. I’m kidding sis, “ Charlie laughed and ruffled Ronnie’s hair. “Who knows, maybe there will be some hot chicks in our new school?” he winked. Ronnie rolled her eyes.
“Hurry! We still have to pack our stuff” Mrs. Carter yelled. Taking a deep breath, Verona forced herself to enter the house. After all, it was not really easy. Entering her room, she froze. A long time ago, this was a place where she could hang out with her best friends, but after the incident all that was left were memories and broken dreams. “Verona!” her mother’s voice pulled her out of her painful thoughts. She walked down the stairs and out of the house.
