And so we ran; free, careless, joyful. We were stupid, but we were happy. We felt so alive, like nothing could ever hurt us. We'd always stake out around the hills waiting for dawn to finally rise from its slumber. The first light insinuated so many things for us; adventure, romance, anguish. We are nothing but phantoms gliding through the sea of lost souls and wayward bodies.
Our fingers intertwined. Our hearts, tied together as one and serving as our trampoline. Climbing trees, breaking open beehives and scurrying away. Laughing when we got stung and sobbed amid the laughter. You showed me how to be brave, how to be myself when I thought I couldn't. You were the reason I pushed onward and kept fighting. All these mechanical parts playing an individual role in this algorithm we so enjoyed tampering with. They click. Breaking and burning as we do the same.
We'd climb over the fences of the closed scrap yard, trespassing with our own right of passage. Climbing the mountains of destroyed cars. Gutted like animals and left here to rot in peace. We went higher, handfuls of rotting fur and skin. Climbing into the carcass and sitting in the front seat of the ribs, we leaned onto each other. Watching the sunset fall as we watched it rise, we open our mouths to speak, but nothing can be heard but the fluttering of doves.
Where did all of that go? Where is it rotting in this world? This rigged game of life and death. You've shown me something; no one belongs anywhere, nothing happens for a reason, and that we're all going to die someday.
And so we ran; free, careless, joyful. Blissful, like we were the last two people on earth.
