"We don't take L's, we just make M's""

Indie Jacobs

*Six Years Earlier*

I walked up and down the hallways as everyone glanced with looks of confusion. "What is she doing back here?" one asked.

"I don't know but if that happened to me, I would never return to school" said another. Whispers echoed throughout the hallways as I continued my confident walk through North Creek High School. Considering the fact that Creek is one of the most known schools in Brooklyn, everyone already knew what happened to me.

Oh fucking well. I didn't dress up today to not be noticed anyways. I had on a black and red, long-sleeved Polo crop top, black ripped jeans, and my Fire Red 4s. I even added a black polo hat over my curly hair and a gold Michael Kors watch and crossbody purse. They can stare all day long.

I walked through the hallways in search of my locker. A figure came up behind my locker with some black Jordans and said "first day back and you don't even acknowledge your best friend? That's really how we doing things now Di?"

I peeked behind the locker and my eyes widened with a bright smile on my face. "Adrian!" I jumped on him throwing my arms around his neck and my legs around his waist. He hugged me back and I mumbled "I missed you big head."

"I missed you too Di." He kissed my cheek and put me down. Someone walked by and tried to cough something slick. But I caught it, and unfortunately, so did Adrian.

"Hoe." I rolled my eyes and turned back to my locker.

See, Adrian was in Brazil when the whole ordeal went down. He told me he had to spend time with his family so I barely got to speak to him over the summer. He obviously didn't know what was going down over here in Flatbush, which explained why he was so confused and lost.

"What the hell is she talking about? Why are they talking about you?"

"Cause I'm pretty." I laughed and flipped my hair.

"I'm serious. I don't like when people talk about my best friend." He placed his arm around my shoulder and I closed the locker with my books in hand. "So what you been up to this summer Ms. Jacobs?"

"Oh nothing," lie. " What about you Mr. Watson? Did you meet someone special in Brazil?" He chuckled before answering.

"Nope. That trip was strictly business. I handled it and got it over with." He said. Business?

"What do you mean business? I thought you were with family?" I looked up at him and frowned.

"Uh-uh yeah. I had fun with them. That's what I meant by 'business'." I stared at him for a little while longer before shrugging and dropping the subject. He's never been known to lie to me so I just believed him.

"First day of 11th grade. You excited kid?" I rolled my eyes. He's older than me by 3 months and he act like he 18 or something. "Roll your eyes again and watch my snatch them out your head."

I giggled , "I mean it's school right? There's no one for me to impress." He sized me and smirked. I slapped him in the head and we began play fighting in the hallways.

Me and Adrian have been best friends since we were in diapers, which was why he was so protective of me. He sorta used to have a crush on me when we were in the 8th grade, but I wasn't feeling him like that. Plus, I didn't want to ruin our friendship by dating him. But when we got to 10th grade, he really changed, appearance wise. But I still don't want to ruin our friendship by dating him, so we're just friends. We had all the same classes this year, so we walked into first period together. The whole class was up out of their seats and the teacher was no where to be found.

It was loud and students were sitting on desks, talking about their summer activities. When Adrian and I walked in, all eyes were on us, well technically me. We walked through the rows of desks while both females and dudes stared at me. I could tell he was getting heated as he walked behind me. I lead him to the desks that sat in the back of the classroom and took my seat.

Some dude tapped his homeboy that was sleeping and pointed directly at me. It was deathly silent while all attention was on me.

The teacher walked in and it was some middle-aged Hispanic woman with a bun in her head and makeup. "Alright class take your seats" she spoke. All the kids hopped off their desks and sat down. "I'm your history teacher for this year. My name is Mrs. Rodriguez and I will not tolerate disrespect. However, I will like to have fun with you guys this year and get to know you on a personal level."

She started talking about expectations for the class and I zoned out. I glanced over at Adrian and he had a blank look on his face, typing away on his phone. I'm hoping he doesn't find out about the whole situation and our friendship doesn't end.

"Indie Jacobs? Where are you?" I lifted my head and hand in the air. Heads turned. Not once did Adrian lift his head from his phone to find out about the commotion.

The teacher had us do introductions about ourselves and one by one, students walked up to the front of the class. When she said my name, I walked up and didn't even glance at the the kids who were obviously looking at me.

"So Indie, tell us about yourself."

"Um, my name is Indie Jacobs. I was born in New York. I'm 16 years old and when I grow up I want to be a fashion stylist. Any questions?" Hands flew into the air once I said that.

I chose some girl who had a New York Yankees jersey, black leggings, and Adidas Originals. "So can you explain what happened over the summer cause we all wanna know" the whole erupted in laughter and nodded their hands awaiting an explanation.

Adrian shook his head and walked out of class. "Aww, We got her in trouble with her little boyfriend" the same girl said. I looked at her and slit my eyes while she smirked.

"Okay class settle down." I looked at her and she nodded her head towards the door and mouthed "go."

I ran outside of the class and searched the hallways for Adrian. I ran around the corner and saw him standing by a locker that must have been his since he had it open. "Adrian!"

He watched me as I walked right up to him. His face was expressionless and he said nothing as I tried to collect my thoughts. "Why'd you walk out of class?"

He didn't say nothing for a few seconds, and I was about to say something else until he said "what happened while I was gone Indie?" I knew it was serious when he didn't even call me my nickname. When I didn't respond, he repeated the question but with more volume.

"Nothing happened. You're overreacting Adrian." His face never changed.

He let out a sarcastic laugh and fished his phone from his pocket. "Oh really so what's this?" The video of me played on his IPhone and my eyes traveled to the ground in shame. "Yea Dante sent it to me" he had that same look on his phone but his voice changed. Like he was laughing at me.

"Care to explain?" He questioned. I was speechless as he placed the phone back in his pocket. He shook his head and turned to walk away but I grabbed his wrist. He looked at me and snatched his hand away.

He walked away and I stood in the middle of the hallway. I couldn't cry because I saw it coming. He still had feelings for me and I knew it. And I still fucked his homeboy. I didn't know I was being recorded. I also couldn't cry because my parents raised a savage. My heart still hurt though.

The bell rang and students fled into the hallways. I walked back to my first period since I didn't take my backpack with me. When I walked in, the other girl was just walking out. She was with her friend and when she saw me, she chuckled and bumped my shoulder.

I walked inside and grabbed my belongings, eager to get the day over with. The teacher saw me and noticed I was in no mood to communicate, so she said nothing.

When I turned the corner, heading to my locker, a deep voice spoke behind me.
