Chapter One
"Susie, knocking would be good. Is there something you wanted?" Amy ignored Susie's reaction and aimed to maintain her composure. Obviously they had been fangs, though why Susie would notice that instead of the state of undress was odd. "What's the matter, hun." The last was in response to the tears running down her assistant's face.
"It's the blood. You said it was for a special client that needed to have blood on the ready. I don't get it, but I know you do and..."
"Susie! Stop. We have a patient here. Could you please, go back out and close the door. I will join you there in a minute." She was surreptitiously trying to pull herself together and remove herself from the hard body under her. She had found that her assistant was easily distracted, very emotional, and usually responded well to direct instruction.
With the door closed, Dax helped her to her feet and straightened his own clothing. "Is she always like that?" He stroked the side of her face and was still connected in the sensual way only old ones could feel; blood calling to blood. "Do you really think she didn't notice what we were doing?" His deep voice sent shivers through her.
Amy sighed. The distracted Susie was the best assistant she'd ever had. Putting two and two together wasn't her forte, but she was gracious to clients and never questioned the unusual circumstances of her job. Fresh out of trade school, Susie had been the perfect choice to help with the small practice. While Amy herself had a tendency to gossip, Susie seemed to forget things as soon as they were no longer right in front of her. "She won't ever mention what she might or might not have guessed. All she'll do is wonder about the fangs, and I shall simply explain we were preparing for our Halloween party.
"Party?" He lay back in the chair and let Amy replace the spit bib that she had grabbed to cover herself. Even in a tiny bib she had remained calm. Finishing the cleaning in silence, she had him rinse and spit and suggested he take a moment while she talked to Susie.
Sitting next to her assistant in the waiting room she explained, "So you see, Suz, we were playing around with the fangs he ordered and trying to see if kissing was possible while wearing them. Now I guess I have to invite him to our party." She threw in a deep sigh. Her acting skills had been tested for two centuries. It was going to be such a chore to have the very attractive Dax at her annual Halloween party.
"Well, he is good looking. All that dark passionate energy he flings around. We do need more men at the party." Susie was avoiding the missing blood. For that Amy was grateful. Trying to explain the blood had been hard enough. She had chosen to say that it was for a patient who had a tendency to bleed more than usual. A hemophiliac. Not that she would ever work on a person like that. Way too tempting. And the blood wasn't even human. "So who do you think took the blood? Nobody has been in there but you and me." Susie looked around the tidy office as if she could spot the blood.
"The janitor?" Amy didn't know the new cleaning crew. She did know they had keys to every room except her private office. "Do you know anything about the new crew?"
"All I know is they are all women and hate cleaning the men's restroom." Susie's eyes lit up. "Do you think one of them stole the blood?" The phone rang distracting her from the conversation just as Dax came into the room.
"So, Dax, I assume Susie has all your billing information?" She would love to have not charged him after the satisfaction he had given her, but then, it did go both ways.
"It's just plain Dax. And I prepaid. I thought it would be easier. I try to keep a low profile, if you know what I mean." His eyes said more then his lips. Although, his lips did have a message of their own as he gazed at her. "Would you like to have dinner with me?"
"Dinner?" She seemed suddenly hazy and in a separate world. It had happened before after joining with an Old One, but that had been so long ago she barely remembered it. The next phase would be sleep. Deep dreamless and nearly impossible to wake from. As she felt her body relaxing and the voices in the room dim even more, she felt around for a chair or...
Too late, she slumped toward the floor and only Dax's quick reaction saved her from hitting her head on the desk.
"She sure knows how to make an exit," Susie quipped.
