Maura's POV

It has been a very quiet and long two days since I have arrived. Lyric and Niall were barely speaking to anyone. The hospital still hadn't called and it was very frustrating. It had seemed as if Niall and Lyric had fallen into some type of routine. They would both get up for the day, Niall would get around and leave for work.

While Lyric, would get and around, she would then visit the babies nursery, which I've seemed to notice that she had finished decorating, so it was ready for the babies to come home too. I felt kind of useless, being here, without feeling like much help. I knew that I wasn't though, because my son and daughter-in-law- called me in a time of need, which I was more than happy to help them. I was sitting at the island in the kitchen, on top of a bar stool slowly sipping my tea. Lyric was in the home office, filling out the baby books. I asked if she needed help but she declined and said she was almost done.

I got up from my seat and put my cup in the sink. I turned around to see Lyric coming out of the office smiling. I was about to start up a conversation when that phone started to ring.

Lyric dashed over to the phone, that was on the counter, and quickly answered it.

"Hello?" She answered putting it on speaker.

"Hi , Is this Mrs.Horan?" The caller asked.

"Yes it is, may I ask who is calling?" She asked, as I noticed Niall walking in the kitchen, returning from work. He stood next to Lyric who held the phone in her hand.

"Oh yes, this Sheila from the hospital calling on the behalf of Michael James Horan, and Grace Paris Horan." She stated calmly. Niall wrapped his arm around Lyric's instinctively.

"How are they?" Lyric asked with panic dripping from her voice.

"Well there is always good news and bad news, Mrs.Horan."

"Please just start off with the good news." Niall interrupted the nurse.

"Hi there Mr.Horan. The good news is that the babies had recovered from the sickness that hit them, which was meningitis. You are allowed back to come see them as well." The bubbly nurse spoke.

"Then what's the bad news?" Lyric spoke quickly.

"As a side affect of the meningitis they will be on medication for a short while. Also another one is, is that the both of them will become permanently deaf over time."

Lyric's POV

I dropped the phone, as I couldn't carry on with the conversation with the nurse. I escaped

the kitchen, and went through the sliding glass doors out to our back porch that led to the back yard. It was warm and breezy, since the month of september didn't know if it wanted to be hot or cold. I felt better standing outside, I could breathe much better since it felt like the kitchen walls were closing in on me.

I thought about what the nurse, Sheila, had told me. It's not the fact that I was upset that my babies were going to be deaf, its that they are just babies and why would anything want to take something from a baby so small and defenseless. I was overjoyed about them being able to see them. I still hope they will be able to come home in four days which is Niall's birthday.

After a few minutes of calming down I went back inside. No one was in the kitchen, but I could hear quiet talking coming from then living room. I walked in the living room to see Niall and Maura on the couch. Maura had her arm wrapped around Niall. It took me a minute to realize that he was crying. I went over and sat next to Niall.

It took him a few seconds to notice my presence, but when he did he engulfed me in his arms. I felt his warm tears cascade down my neck. I rubbed my hand up and down his back, trying my best to sooth him. Maura left the living room with a smile, knowing I could comfort Niall better than she could at the moment.

"Niall, it's going to be okay. We are a family we can get through this." I whispered.

"I know, but they're just babies. Why did this have to happen to them?" He cried his face still buried in my neck.

"I don't know honey, I don't know, but you know what?"

"What?" He asked, finally looking up at me.

"We're going to be the best parents we can be to our babies, and love them unconditionally, no matter what happens to them." I smiled as a tear rolled out of my cheek. Niall replied by placing a kiss on my lips. He pulled away and smiled.

"Let's go see our babies."
