It took me a month to learn that spell. Now I wish I hadn't. It's effects took hold instantly. The sky became dark, clouds loomed in the distance. My body racked with terror.
What have I done? My mind raced through every idea of what to do, but only one thing made enough sense to me that I had to do it, run. I ran, not knowing where I was going. Maybe if I ran it would stop? What kind of sense did that make? Eventually I came up to the beach. The gray clouds were still following me. What would happen when they got here, I had no idea. Something completely different could happen. I had no choice but to hide in the ocean. Luckily I had mastered a spell to help me breathe underwater and I knew for sure this one wasn't dangerous. Maybe you should help people above the water and not just hide, my conscience advised me, but I didn't listen and ran straight into the water.
As soon as I was completely under I immediately found myself standing right back in front of the dark clouds. They had appeared under water. There's no escape. I had no idea idea what this would do to me but I stood there, sorta ready for what was coming my way.
The storm was still raging despite being underwater. My long hair whipped around my face. A glowing green light clawing it's way through the water towards me.
I held up my small hands, hoping the same things that started this disaster would also stop it.
The water swirled around me, leaving me alone with my whirling thoughts.
I've done nothing with my life! My mind reeled. I'm still a child! Still in school! I need another chance!
Then, the lights and clouds, and water rushed together forming the shape of a slim woman. The storm was still raging but it seemed outside of us. Away. We were the eye of the storm.
The silhouette, now equipped with long inky black hair, and a face so serene her black eyes seemed to start straight through me and into the sea beyond.
She held out her hand,
And spoke.
"Calm," was all she said and immediately the storm stopped. Everything was once again peaceful under the water. I stared at her not being able to make full sentences due to what just happened. She stared back, but more of a scrutinizing stare than a disbelief stare, like mine. I blinked once or twice and realized that she was just a normal person, a really strange normal person. What made her strange was the way she almost blended in with the water, yet I could still see her perfectly fine. She spoke once again, "Spread." The water around me swirled away and formed a sort of dome around us.
"Who are you?"
"I have not felt that spell in a very long time young lady." Her voice was smooth and liquid. Almost as if the water around us was formed from the words that she had breathed. She was beautiful and captivating and she-
She didn't answer my question.
"Who are you?" I ask more forcefully.
She looked at me. Her mouth cocked into a knowing smile. Like she had a secret she had no intent of sharing.
"My darling," her fingers trailed down my cheek. "I am the Sea, the Keeper of magic, and now, if you agree to my terms, your master."
"My master?" I snarl. "What are you talking about?"
She chuckled, her laugh hard. "Dear girl," she shook her head. "You cast the spell, an ancient spell only used to punish the hated. You are now cursed. And the only way to rid yourself of that curse," she stopped, her eyes narrow. "is to agree to my terms."
