First Day

I don't know what to do. I've been feeling sick lately. So sick. Today is my first day of school. I hope I can make it.

"Come on Lynn, let's go or you'll be late." Mom screams from downstairs. I hurry and grab my favorite sweater. Wow. I'm in high school now. I can hardly believe it.

My brother, Christian, and my sister Nicole are sitting at the dining room table eating cereal as slowly as possible. It's so annoying that they always make me late. Christian is 16, I'm 14, and Nicole is 12. I grab an apple and begin going through my bag for the eighth time to make sure everything is there.

"Dammit, I said come on guys. I have places to be." Mom calls from the other room. We all pick up our bags and head toward the door. All of us pile in the van. Christian is up front with mom and Nicole and I are in the back. Like always.

As we drive to the school, mom is talking on her cell phone. She's always talking to someone, but it's never us. You see, mom is an alcoholic and has been for years. When she isn't drunk and screaming, she's hiding with a hangover from hell. Or on the phone talking about her hangover.

We pull into the school and I jump out of the van and immediately search for my two best friends, Renee' and Hannah. We've known each other since birth, but in a small town like this, it's hard not to. God I feel so sick. I found Hannah and Renee' by the bathroom and speed walk over to them.

"Hey girls, how was summer?" I asked politely, trying to swallow the foul taste of vomit in my mouth. I look at the clock and notice we have five minutes until first bell. I excuse myself to go throw up in the bathroom. What is wrong with me?

Have I mentioned I haven't had my period in two months?
