A/N: Sorry for the lack of updates in the past few days. I was busy doing assignment work last night D: and Tuesday I was waiting for the notification error to be fixed.

Thank you for 32k reads! This is the highest amount of reads I've ever received on something I've written! :D Also, this is #546 in fanfiction, which also makes me very happy :3

I also had really bad writer's block while writing this. I don't really remember what happened after L's death. I stopped really caring about DN so I stopped paying attention. I know the rough outline, but not the details so if I get something wrong in this chapter please let me know. I will be binge reading the rest of the manga so I know what to write :D

Chapter Sixteen

I sit on the bed in the small room I've been given for my stay here and stare blankly at the wall. So much has happened since I arrived here.

"Everyone, this is Benihime. She's L's sister." Roger had said to all the children. They all looked at me with wide eyes and seemed to be rather amazed at the fact that a living relative of the famous L is standing in front of them. To be honest, I would have been amazed too. Roger turns to face me. "Benihime, I'd like to introduce you to L's successor, Near. We have some things to discuss."

I followed him to his office. When I walk in, I notice a boy with white hair in white pyjamas is sat on a chair already. His head turned to face me as I sat down next to him. I notice he has grey eyes when our eyes meet. I give him a small smile. He's the one that was supposed to take over as L. Instead someone beat him to it.

In a few days, I'll be going to New York with Near to help him set up the SPK. He's already arranged a meeting with the President of the United States to discuss Kira and the information he has already received through L.

I lean back on the bed and stare at the ceiling when my head hits the pillow.

Near is odd, but then I think everyone here is weird in their one way. Even L was strange. It must be the side effect of being super intelligent, I guess. I'm probably weird myself, I just don't notice it.

"Who's Mello?" I ask Near as we sit in a private area of the plane. I can't imagine how much these seats cost.

"He used to be at Wammy's. He left shortly after L's death." Near says monotonously. He continues to twirl a strand of his white hair around his index finger.

"Oh," I murmur. Near doesn't say anymore on the matter. I have a feeling Mello was the successor under Near. Roger informed me on how they pick their successors and that it's done by intelligence. There must have been some rivalry between Near and Mello, which is probably why Near seems to not like talking about Mello.

"Why did he leave?" I ask curiously as I stare at the boy (who's 18, he looks so young though).

"To find Kira on his own." Near replies simply.

I try to start a conversation to help calm my nerves with flying, but trying to talk to Near is like trying to get blood from a stone. I let out a sigh of defeat and yank a book out of my bag to pass the time.

"What?!" I splutter and look at Near with wide eyes. I stop slouching on the chair I'm sitting on, neglecting my computer and the hacking I was doing. My job in the SPK is to hack into L's old computer and steal all the old files that remained and to steal any new information they get. So far we haven't been caught.

"The mafia have kidnapped the NPA Director." Near repeats simply as he places another piece of his puzzle down on the table. A small smile flashes over his lips as he stares at his now-complete puzzle.

"I know that! Why?" I snap back and frown at the kid. He's so annoying, his social skills are appalling.

"They want the Death Note. He will be returned in exchange for the Death Note in the Task Force's possession." Shivers are through my body at the mention of the Death Note.

"Are they going to hand over the Death Note?" Panic is causing my voice to tremble.

"I doubt it." Near mumbles. "I think that Mello is behind it." My eyes widen at the mention of Near's old rival. I haven't heard Near say his name for several months now.

"Mello? Has he joined the mafia to try to defeat Kira himself or something?" Near doesn't reply and I turn back to my computer. I begin clicking through L's files and find the letter the fake L left me. I frown at the thought of someone pretending to be my brother to steal my Life Note.

"Maybe I can try to meet up with this new L. He seemed pretty eager to meet me and see my Life Note." I say to Near and turn to face him. His eyes don't leave his new puzzle.

"No. L told us to keep you away from any threats." Near says firmly as he continues to work on his puzzle. I frown.

"Or we send someone else?" I say. "We could send a fake me."

"No. I don't want to risk anyone's lives."

"But-"

"No."

I let out a sigh and turn back to my computer. I rarely find anything interesting that we can use to catch Kira.

Those idiots! They handed over the Death Note to the mafia!

I scowl as I watch SPK members drop down one by one. My heart thudding in my chest at the thought of my name being written down as well, even though I know full well that no one has knowledge of my real name.

Will I be the last person standing?

I look at Near, and the remaining people standing: Halle Lidner, Anthony Rester and Stephen Gevanni.

"Shit." I curse as I look at all the dead bodies on the floor. I look back at Near. "Mello?"

"Yes." Near says bitterly and continues to scowl.

I unlock the door to my apartment as I brush a hand through my hair.

Today couldn't get any worse. I really want to run a bath and sink into the bubbles. I need to relax. I don't care if it's almost one in the morning.

I throw my apartment door open and kick my shoes off as I try to shut the door behind me, however I'm stopped as a hand is placed over my mouth. I try to elbow the person behind me as my eyes widen.

My heart beat accelerates and I try to struggle out of the person's grip.

"We'll be taking you and your Life Note." The person whispers into my ear. "So where is it? I won't be leaving without it."

"Don't, Benihime!" Ari screams out.

A/N: Bleh, I feel like this is a crappy chapter. Idk why D:
