This chapter was dedicated to GooglyGoggles, thanks for the awesome ideas!
I waited patiently as I stared at the wall, studying all the posters on the wall. They varied from the heart to lower intestinal track. I cringed at all the graphic pictures the doctors see every day. Don't know how they can stand it.
I heard someone rustle outside the door, my head shot up away from the posters to the door, just as Dr. Mann walked in.
He was carrying a clipboard and looked awful spiffy in the white lab coat, I must say. He closed the door behind him, then positioned himself at the desk. After arranging his papers, he looked at me and introduced himself.
"Hi, Maria. I'm Dr. Mann and I'll be examining you today,"
I nodded to show him I wasn't stupid and understood him.
"Okay, so first, I'm going to ask you some questions. First of all, what is wrong?"
Okay, starting off nice and easy, I thought. "I have been throwing up a LOT recently, sometimes I feel nauseous for no reason. I did go to a party last weekend," I paused and wondered if I should have said that, or if I should continue. "And I got pretty sick after that."
He wrote down some notes then proceeded to the next question.
"Okay, next question. How often do you eat or how is your appetite on a normal day?"
"2 meals at least." I said without thinking.
He wrote down some more notes. "Have you had any problems with your stools?"
I cringed at the question, but just shook my head, remembering he was a doctor and this is the stuff that have to ask.
He looked up from his notes and stared me straight in the eye. Only his lips moved.
"Are you sexually active?"
This time I couldn't help but show surprise. I felt my eyes get s little bigger and my cheeks went red. I frantically searched for an answer before it got awkward, too late thought, it already did. Umm, there was that one time with Tony from school. Matthew and I just met, but what did I do at that party!?! I couldn't have gotten morning sickness that soon. Oh crap, what about that time a month ago? My stomach dropped to my knees and the room felt really hot all of the sudden.
"Umm, yeah. Sometimes, but not very often." I blurted out.
The doctor shook his head and let out a slow breath, then we wrote down some notes. After that, he asked me a few more uncomfortable questions and I answered then as honestly as possible.
My stomach was flipping out now. I felt sweat on my forehead and my hands started to shake. I was suspicious that he was suspicious that I was... pregnant. My mind wandered from the worse case scenario to the facts that I was being really over dramatic and needed to chill.
Before I knew it he set down his clipboard and sat the way doctors down, elbows on his knees, leaned forward, hands together.
"From your symptoms, I can conclude the source of your pain is either food allergies, some sort of deeper problem or," he stopped and sighed, "Your pregnant."
My worst suspicions were confirmed.
"Do you have any allergies?" I shook my head no and he continued.
"I'm going to have you take some pregnancy tests." He searched his cupboard until he found the small instrument that would determine if I had a whole world of trouble ahead of me or a big misunderstanding.
He stood up and signaled me to follow, out of the room. He led me to the bathroom and handed me 3 pregnancy tests. "I want you to use all of these, just to make sure."
I sighed, took them and entered the bathroom, locking the door behind me.
5 minutes later, I had all of them completed. They all had one blue stripe. Negative. I sighed a huge sigh of relief as I looked at the last one, confirming 100% it was negative.
I walked out of the room and to my right, as Dr. Mann was waiting for me. I handed him the tests and he smiled as he looked at them. "Thank goodness, am I right?" I smiled and nodded.
He started walking again and I followed. He took me to the room we had just left, the room he asked me all the questions.
I sat down again in the same spot and he spoke to me in a very real voice.
"Since the tests came back negative, I would like you to see a gastroenterologist, a stomach doctor. I would like to recommend Dr. Hild's office in Birmingham. Very great reviews, it's where we send all of our patients with stomach issues." He handed me a slip of paper with all the doctors information. After that, he smiled and excused me from his office.
I walked out of the white room into the white hallway, ready to confront my dad about the issue. I entered the waiting room and saw the boy and his mother gone, my dad was he only one there, read a magazine. I smiled to show him everything went well, and handed his the paper.
"This is were Doctor Mann told me to schedule an appointment," I said. "Said he was the better doctor around."
My dad took the paper and examined it, pulling out his phone and dialed the phone number. He left and I followed as he was talking to the reseptionist, planning an appointment.
My stomach flipped again, wondering what the appointment would be like. Would they just feel my stomach or stick a weird metal instrument inside me? I looked up as my dad put the phone in his pocket.
"Good news, I got an appointment today. It is in 2 hours, so do you want to grab something to eat?"
I nodded and suggested Freddy's, cause I was starving for some fry sauce. We pulled into the Freddy's down the street and walked inside. Immediately, I could smell the wonderful fries and burgers. We walked to the counter, where a young woman, way too happy to work here, took our order. I ordered a cheeseburger with fries and a cookie dough concrete. My dad ordered a half pounder with a chocolate brownie delight concrete.
After a while, our order came and I retrieved it. I sat the tray down at our table and gave my dad his order, while taking a giant bite of my delicious burger. My stomach was still uncomfortable from the thought of another doctors appointment. What is still wrong with me?
