By the ancient years people thought that Angels are spiritual beings. They used to think that they're God's messengers. That connect the Earth with the Sky. They also used to think that sometimes angels came down to Earth to protect and to guide humans. They were described as beautiful creatures with human body and "bird" wings.
Now, not many people believe in their existence. However there are still people that "study" them, they're place in History. The theological study of angels is known as "angelology.
