Dr. Edward Card was dead. He died peacefully in his sleep, at the ripe old age of 88. Card knew death was coming, his cybernetic eyes had been slowly leaking damaging chemicals into his brain for over 30 years; it was a miracle he survived as long as he did. The doctors, (including Card himself), did all they could to stabilize his condition, but once it was obvious there was nothing that could save him, Card began to ensure that his legacy, unlike his body, would never die. Before he descended into the plane of insanity that so often those at death's door find themselves trapped in, Edward Card created a machine that would end the world. This was not the first brilliant mechanical creation of his, before his brain condition had set in, Card had been a self-stylized super villain, relying on machines rather than superhuman genetics. The machine he built on his death bed though, put all his other accomplishments to shame. This new device, which Card whimsically dubbed "The Second Seal", (see Revelation 6:3-4) would have the ability to drastically alter the genetics of 5% of all the teenagers in the world. Card chose teenagers specifically because of their adaptive ability, and their weak minds. They would have the strength to adapt to the genetic changes, but they wouldn't know what to do with their newfound power. Card was perfectly aware that his machine, The Second Seal, would throw America, and likely the world, into chaos. He didn't care. He would be dead. His name though, would never die. His name would be spoken centuries hence. In a way, through brining about global anarchy, Dr. Card had achieved immortality.
