Rules of LOVE

Prologue

            “Victoria!”

Cecelia’s voice was barely audible over the screams, gun shots, and battle cries. I felt the sting of my palms and the blood in between my fingers, soaked into the grass. Stupid branch. I scrambled to my feet in a panic, and ran towards the direction (I thought) I heard Cecelia’s voice call from. I picked up my silky blue dress, stripped of its once-gleaming pearls and jewels and torn all along the bottom. God, my legs ached. Why’d the enemy have to attack before I had enough time to properly transform?

I saw a gleaming lamp near the edge of the woods. Lit underneath it were two determined but tired hazel eyes searching. For me. I would’ve let out a sigh of relief just at the sight of her, but I was panting too hard to be relieved. Suddenly, a tall man dressed in black jumped out at me and raised his sword. Too shocked to do anything else, I gulped and held out my arms as a shield.

Thump. I looked down to the man lying on the ground, blood now seeping out of his back. Standing above him was Cecelia with a bloodied knife wielded in her hand, her hazel eyes still tired, yet gleaming at the sight of me, safe. She gave me a quick look of sympathy, hugged me hard and quick, and pulled me away into the woods.

I didn’t even have time to look back.

•••3 months later•••

There are a lot of differences between Myna and Earth, at least in the generation I was born in. Maybe’s it’s because of the war going on between humans and Magics, but on Earth everyone seems so much more trustworthy. I’m surrounded by humans, the enemy, and yet they don’t act anything like the bloodthirsty fools I knew them to be. I also seem to be learning a lot here. For example:

(1)NEVER underestimate the power of machines. They’re EVERYWHERE!

(2)You can never tell whether someone’s joking or not.

(3)Girls can be very spirited and independent without being shunned. And have you see what they wear?!?!? It’s awesome!

(4)Boys are so immature! (And so cute at the same time!)

(5)Love is very important.

Lesson five has been my favorite so far. I love how romance is the top priority to most humans. I want it to be mine too. Though I’ve never liked blending in with the crowd. I’ve always loved being different, stand out from everyone else. When everyone sits, I stand. While people talk, I sing. Of course, Cecelia told me I should try to blend in best I can. Human Agents from Myna will probably come any day now to try to take me back to be held hostage. Then again, she’s been saying that for months now and still no one’s come, at least to our knowledge.

While I continued to think about… well, everything, I didn’t even notice the blue minivan rushing towards me on the cross walk. They were about to turn from a curb and right into me without me even noticing! However, right at the last second, I heard a boy say, “Watch out!” and felt someone tug me to the sidewalk hurriedly.

I stumbled onto the sidewalk clumsily but alive. I looked up to see the boy, probably a year or two older than me, look at me with astonishment in his dark brown eyes. Before I had a chance to say anything, he ran.

“Wait!” I called out to him, trying to run after him, but he was too fast. Poo. How can he run like that? I sulked in the other direction. I couldn’t even thank him. I walked along the busy highway, only a yard’s width of grass between me and the machines that almost killed me.  Suddenly, I felt someone tap my shoulder. I jumped slightly and turned to see Cecelia looking at me with a raised eyebrow. “You can’t go ten days without almost killing yourself, can you?”
