The final school bell rings. The old chairs creak and the desks wobble as everyone rushes out of the room before our teacher gives out more homework. I know the bell rang about 5 minutes ago, but I just cannot stop reading! It's a murder mystery-my favorite! I finally find a place to stop, fold the page, and gently close my book. I enter the hallway and scan the crowd of people, searching for Ashley, Rachel, and Hailey. I finally spot Rachel's straight blonde hair that falls to her shoulders. And I see Ashley's light caramel skin and her long black hair. Then my eyes go to Hailey who is up against the lockers, texting her overprotective mom. I casually find my way through the clusters of students. I approach them without saying a word. "Finally, Tess. What took you so long?" Rachel questioned. "Sorry, I couldn't find you guys! Plus, I got caught up in my book again." I explained apologetically. "You and your books, Tess. I'm starting to think that we're being replaced!" said Hailey, with a little bit of sarcasm. "What? No, you guys are my best friends! And who could ever replace you guys?" I assured her. "Um, this!" exclaimed Hailey as she snatched my book out of my hands. "No, you guys are one of a kind!" I told them as I wrapped my arms around them. "Ok, lets go to my house." offers Ashley. We emerge from the school after a long day of schoolwork. We start walking on the sidewalk. We take our time, observing nature with our arms linked. I notice Wendy Harris creeping towards the woods and my curiosity kicks in. "Hey, I'll catch up with you guys later, ok? I forgot. I have to go help my mom with something." I explained, feeling bad for lying to my best friends. "Ok, Tess. See you later!" said Ashley. I wander off into the woods where Wendy was, and I follow her footsteps. I spot her dirty blonde hair through the bushes, being careful not to step on a twig. It's getting dark outside. I better get to Ashley's house. I turn around, figuring that she is probably just wandering off. Until, I see a person dressed in all black with a knife. It lunges at her and tackles her, pinning her to the ground. She lets out a faint scream but a hand quickly reaches out to cover her mouth. The figure reaches for its backpack and grabs duct tape to go over her mouth. I do not know what to do. I can see her struggling, I want to help her. The predator holds the knife to her throat. I can see the tears streaming down her face as her body shakes rapidly in fear. I panic and pick up a rock and I throw it as hard as I could at the predator without being seen. It looks around, confused. Wendy spots me. I make a small gesture and she understands it. Run. She kicks its shin as hard as she could. The figure fell backwards. She quickly gets up, starts to run, buts she trips on a branch and stumbles down the hill. The predator, now furious, slides down the hill and jumps on top of her. She flinched in pain. It then reaches for the knife and stabs her chest. As she let out a final heart shattering scream. Tears streamed down my face as I hurry back to Ashley's house. I catch one last look at Wendy. I see her killer and notice a glimpse light brown hair emerging from the hoodie. My heart, pounding, I notice my hair is a mess, my clothes are torn, my makeup is smudged, and I smell like shit. I ran back to my house to take a shower and change to find Rachel, Ashley, and Hailey, sitting on my couch. "Oh my god, T! What happened?" Rachel exclaimed. I blankly stare at them and slowly walked upstairs with tears running down my face. The girls follow me upstairs. I close my door and collapse on my bed and start balling my eyes out, still in complete shock of what just happened. Imagining how her parents must feel right now. They must be worried sick. She did not deserve to go out that way. She was way too young. I'm starting to feel regret. I wish I could have done something that could have saved her. I should have been the hero. My door creaks open and I see a figure-Wendy's killer-in my doorway. I let out a loud scream and hide in my blankets. A kind hand touches my back. My head emerges from the safety of my comforter. I look up to see that it's only Ash, Hailey, and Rach. I start to cry in relief. "T, what happened?" said Rachel, sounding very concerned. I motion Ash to close the door. They all sit on my bed. They are my best friends. I can trust them. I think I'll tell them. My mouth opens and spills out every single gory detail. My words brought tears to their eyes. Once I finish telling the story of Wendy's unfortunate death, they start to comfort me. I then realize how many times I will have to repeat that story to the cops. Or do I? Maybe I can start early and pursue my dream of becoming a detective. Maybe I don't even have to tell anyone else. Maybe I could investigate before the cops. "Guys," I whisper, "don't tell a soul what I just said, ok?" I asked them. "Whatever you want." Ashley said as she squeezed us all tighter. I'm glad I told my besties about this. I don't know what I would do without them. I remember that i have to take a shower. So, I walk to the bathroom and I notice that my faintly tan skin is scrapped up, my long brown hair is in knots, and my heart is shattered.
