The name. My name. Our names. The one thing they let us keep. Some of us had our doubts, of course. Were they our real names? No one could tell. But it was all we had, and we clung onto them dearly. Most greenies remembered their name as it came to them. It would hit them, like a Eureka! moment. Or possibly lightning. Well, that was how Minho described it (😉).That wasn't quite how it happened for me.
"Y/N?!" It was the first word I heard. And I would never forget the look on that blond boy's face. Shock, shame and fear mixed together, ruining his angelic features, like ice cream left to spoil in the heat of the midday sun.
"Well, I'll be shucked." Another said.
"Get her out!" Someone else yelled, and I was tugged from the cage.
"I missed you, bud." A burly Asian boy told me, hugging me fiercely.
"Get away from me!" I yelled, thrashing. His arms tightened in shock, caging me.
"Y/N!" Another voice yelled.
"Newt, don't." A calmer voice said to the boy who was presumably Newt.
"N-No! Y/N!" He yelled again. I pushed the muscular boy away, turning to see what was going on. The blond from earlier was being held back, and he was struggling against his confinement, a wiry boy with an emotionless expression.
"Let me go!" Newt yelled.
"Take him to the slammer."I lay awake, wriggling in the small hammock that had been constructed. The night was cool, the air crisp. I understood that I had been here before, that much was apparent. As far as I understood, I had been one of the first in the glade, and had disappeared around a year ago, and that was all I had been told.
"Hey, Y/N?" The words made me jump. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to startle you. I just saw you were awake, and thought you could use some company." I turned, to see a partially familiar face staring at me.
"It's Gally, right?" I asked. "And don't worry about it."
"Yeah, that's me." He replied, shifting onto his eyebrows (sike! Elbows).
"Were we friends before I disappeared?" I asked.
"We were very close, yeah." He chuckled lightly, running a hand through his short hair.
"How so?" I cocked my head to one side.
"I don't want to overwhelm you, but we used to spend a lot of time together." He told me, a small smile tugging on the corner of his lips.
"Gally, do you mind if I tell you something?" I asked.
"Shoot." He answered.
"Your eyebrows make you look kind of scary." I bit my lip, and Gally threw his head back, laughing to the skies.
"You're funny." He said, once he had calmed down. "We used to have fun together."
"What job did I do?" I asked.
"You were..... You were a runner." He frowned. "But you had an..... Accident. We were re-trialling you when you disappeared."
"What kind of accident?" I pressed.
"Sorry, chick, but I can't tell you. Boss's orders." He shook his head sadly.
"Did you just call me chick?" I held back a laugh.
"Yeah. It is, well was, kind of a thing we do- did." He rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly. "Anyway, chick, you've got a big day tomorrow. You'd better get some rest."
"'Kay, Gally. See you in the morning." I said, closing my eyes.
"Night, chick."
