Chapter Thirty-Three
September 2012
Present Day
I paced up and down the corridor and wringed my hands together nervously. Josh had been gone for almost ten minutes now, and Mom and Dad had gone to the cafeteria to get some coffee. Drake was still inside with Avy, Mom had dragged him in there and had closed the door behind him. I’d wanted to do that for ages now, and Mom had done it in a minute. Avy got her bossiness and unyielding determination from Mom.
Well, back when she’d been bossy and unyieldingly determined, that was.
Jake had texted Josh and had told him that he was on his way to the hospital. I needed to talk to Drake about his coming here before Jake showed up and surprised him.
But I didn’t want to interrupt him and Avy. I didn’t want to ruin their moment if they were having one. I didn’t know what was going on in there, but I really wanted it to be good. I didn’t want them to be having a heartbreaking conversation, I didn’t want them to be in pain while in there, I wanted them to be laughing. I didn’t want Drake to make things harder for Avy, she was suffering as it was.
Two male voices echoed down the corridor and I whipped my head around, looking at the end of the corridor expectantly. I recognized Josh’s voice as he and Jake turned and started walking down the corridor. Jake looked the same, still tall, still muscly, still had his nape-length light-brown hair, clean-shaven jaw, but there was something different about him. I narrowed my eyes and watched him closely as he and Josh approached me.
Jake smiled at me sheepishly and held out his hand when he reached me. “It’s good to see you, Gaby.”
I scowled at him but shook his hand. I couldn’t be disrespectful to him infront of Josh. I didn’t want to put him in an awkward position. “Hello, Jake.”
He cocked his eyebrow. “I see your sister’s rubbed off on you more since I left.” He rocked back on his heals as we dropped our hands. “How is she?”
“Not having the time of her life, I’m afraid.” I shook my head. “She’s exhausted and she could use a good night’s sleep.”
“I’m sorry to hear that.” He paused. “So, what made you change your mind about my coming here? Last time we spoke you were very adamant about me not showing up.”
“Well, desperate times call for desperate measures.” I sighed. “But, you might not be needed after all, I’ll have to check and see.”
“Needed?” He frowned. “How am I needed exactly?”
“Drake and Avy sort of broke up a couple of months ago.” I replied, his face remained impassive. “But you knew that already.” I gave Josh a look, and he shrugged apologetically at me.
“It’s no secret.” Jake said. “I don’t know why they broke up, don’t know what exactly happened, but I heard about it.”
“Alright, good.” I nodded. “So basically I want them to see you, Drake will probably fight with you, and he’ll be jealous because let’s face it, Jake, you’re not just going to see Avy that distressed and not offer her a solution that involves you being with her and supporting her, especially when she’s single. Drake will feel threatened and he’ll be forced to man up and try and get her back. And you know, when she sees two guys who look like the two of you fighting over her when she looks like that, it’ll be very self-esteem-boosting for her and believe me, she needs some major self-esteem-boosting.”
