Among the cattails, on the edge of the pond, where the moss and the algae preferred not to grow, there was a small colony of Hyacinths. They were a lovely white color, and bloomed every spring, no matter the upkeep, or lack thereof. The only way to see them was if you trudged through the knee-high cattails (hopefully in knee-high rubber boots, for they were notorious for scratching), and walked directly into their own little world. To newcomers, seeing wild Hyacinths was strange, for the seasoned botanist would know that Hyacinths were not native to this particular area of Alabama, nor tolerant of this much standing water. To the natives, these were known as "The Miracle Flowers," for they had survived every year since their planting when the small town was founded. Well, at least they had until the year Rose returned from college with Dylan.
