Cars
The cars all line up in a line, weeping people in them. They were weeping for me. I was dead. I had died in a deadly car crash. I felt the tears gather in my eyes as I found my boyfriend's car. His eyes were red and puffy and he was trying not to cry. His mother was next to him, holding her hands primly in her lap. Her eyes were dry, but also puffy. His sister was sitting behind him, her lips set in a grim line. She was my best friend, and his twin sister, Lara. I shook with grief at their expressions and fled away from their car. I found my parents car at the front. Their grief struck me as soon as I got there. My brother, Alex's, face was totally wet and puffy, and his eyes were angry. I turned to my sister and she was weeping into Alex's shoulder. Alex had his arm wrapped around her and he was talking in a soothing voice.
"She wouldn't want you to cry, Amie. You know that. She would slap you lightly and tell you that she doesn't want you to mess up your pretty face." He grinned slightly and she giggled, tears spilling down her face. I smiled sadly to myself. Alex was right, I would have done that. I sniffled and went up to the front of my parents' car. Mom was gripping the stirring wheel so tightly that her knuckles turned white. Her face was set in a neutral expression, yet her eyes were red from already shed tears. Dad was sitting next to her, his arms crossed tightly and his expression so broken, it broke my non-beating heart.
"Daddy, I'm here!" I whispered, knowing that he couldn't hear me.
"Frederick, did you hear something?" Mom sniffled. He shook his head.
"Alexander, is Amie alright?" He said gruffly. I turned to look at my brother, who shook his said.
"She's upset." He answered just a gruffly. I winced at their clipped tones and knew my death had caused them to argue more often.
"I wish she was here." Mom whispered. The silence following her words was shocking.
"But I am here! Just not in physical form!" I screamed, knowing that they couldn't hear me. Tears started again and I pounded on the window shield. I pounded so hard, I thought I would break it. But I wasn't here. The gates to the church opened and the cars drove through them. Parking at the front, Ethan got out, holding onto Lara's hand. They froze at the picture of me on the front of the door. Lara started weeping again and Ethan released her. She ran inside the church. Ethan stopped in front of the picture and I saw a single tear fall down his cheek. He put his hand on my picture cheek.
"God, Rosie, I miss you. I miss you every day." He whimpers. I half walk; half float over to him. I placed my hand on his shoulder, and he shuddered as the coldness sinks in.
"Anyone but you, Rosie." He whispers. "Anyone but you!" He sank you his knees and wept into his hands. My sister Amie walked up to him and placed her small hands on his shoulders and I tensed. She was only twelve but she copied my position exactly, whenever he was upset. I felt a tear fall down my cheek and I screamed out loud. It was so damn unfair that I had died, and all my family and friends had to live with that fact! I screamed again and wished I could bury my face into Ethan's shoulder. Suddenly, all the anger went out of me when I saw my brother kneeling in front of my picture, completely letting go. We'd always been so close, Amie, Alex, and me. Alex was only a year older then I was. We'd shared everything; memories, fights, laughter, tears. Everything that I had been revolved around my friends and my family. Nothing I had done was ever done without one of them. I felt so alone. I was there, but not. I could see them, and I could see the cars lined up trying to find a spot to come to my funeral. As that thought caught my mind, I choked out a sob. Amie looked behind her, directly at me. I froze. She gasped, her brown eyes going wide and she opened her mouth to scream, but I ran towards her and shook my head.
"Shh. Don't, Amie. They'll think you're crazy. Just act as though you can't see me." I whispered to her. She was shaking with sobs, but I backed away from her, as much as it broke my heart. I just wanted to take her small, slender body in my arms, but I couldn't. She turned away from me, back to Ethan and Alex. I watched her mouth move and Ethan whipped around, his eyes frantically searching. I chose to show him I was here. I closed my eyes and suddenly I heard his scream. He ran over to me, tears streaming down his face. He fell to his knees and wept.
