Jocelyn Fairchild ran up the stairs to her apartment and locked the door. Running to wake her one year old daughter, she shouted at Luke to call the New York Institute.

Rubbing her eyes, Clary Fray sat up, still half asleep, mumbling to herself.

"Honey, we're going on a trip!" her mother said. "Just come with me and we'll go meet some of mommy's friends!"

Luke called out to Jocelyn. "They're on their way, but they'll want to know where you've been."

"I'll deal with that when the time comes," snapped Jocelyn. "Right now my priority is my daughter's life!"

The pounding on the door got louder and louder as Jocelyn Fray and Luke Garroway hoped that Robert and Maryse Lightwood would get there in time.

But just before Luke could shout to Jocelyn that the Institute was almost here, the door splintered and opened, revealing a white haired man surrounded by a pack of Ravener demons.

"Valentine," Jocelyn hissed. "Get the hell out of my house."

"My dear wife, that's no way to treat your husband! I see you're still associating with filth."

"What do you want, Valentine?" Luke growled, stalling for time.

"What do I want?" Valentine repeated. "I want you dead, and I want my wife home with me, an-" He stopped mid sentence. "But what need could you have for a cot? After all, it's not like you've got Jonathan to look after."

Jocelyn flinched violently. "Stay away from Clarissa, or so help me..." she growled.

"Clarissa. Not a name I've heard before. Tell me, is it the mutt's spawn?" Valentine drawled, trying desperately not to look interested.

"No. She is the daughter of myself and a great revolutionary I once knew." Jocelyn replied. "But you no longer have a right to her, Valentine. You gave up that right a long time ago."

That drew a response out of Valentine. "A daughter," he breathed. "Demons, kill the mutt, but bring me the woman alive. And don't touch the infant."

And with that, the fighting began. Jocelyn and Luke tried to keep as close to the cot as possible, but as demons swarmed them they were forced to leave it unprotected. Valentine walked over to the cot and picked up the baby girl inside it.

He was about to say something, but when he heard the sound of running feet outside and realised that the Institute was here, he paled and ordered the demons to retreat.

And with that, still holding Clarissa Fray in his arms, Valentine stepped out of the door, into the night.

When Robert and Maryse arrived, they took one look at the apartment, and the sobbing woman in front of them, and took her back to the New York Institute. They later informed the Clave that Valentine lived on with an heir, but as the years went on with no trouble, most forgot to be cautious.

Jocelyn stayed with the Lightwoods for a while before going back to Idris, but she never forgot jet lost daughter.

Clary Fray no longer existed though. In her place was Clarissa Morgenstern, daughter of Valentine.
