Chapter 1: The Beginning

“She’s needed here, we all know that.”

“Well how are we supposed to get her here?”

::::::::::::

“Who... who are you?"

He didn't reply, he just smirked.

I looked around; everything was pitch black. I couldn't see anyone except for the man standing in front of me. "Where am I?"

“I’ll see you soon.”

With that, he vanished into thin air.

I slowly opened my eyes and realised that it was a dream. I lazily got off my bed and started getting ready for school.

“Natalie, what do you want for breakfast?” my foster mother asked when she saw me walking down the stairs.

“Anything’s fine,” I replied, smiling.

She had adopted me when I was five, and she had always treated me like I was her own. I never knew anything about my parents and why they would leave me alone, but I didn’t blame them. I chose to believe there was a reason why they left me. I don’t have any memories of them, and according to my mum, they had left me since I was two.

“Good luck with school,” my mum said as she placed a plate of pancakes with blueberries and maple syrup on the table in front of me.

-

A few stops after I had boarded the bus, a tall man boarded the bus. Something about his presence just made me feel so uneasy. He was dressed in black and he had his hat and his pair of sunglasses on. He walked down the bus to find a seat and even though I couldn't see his eyes because of his sunglasses, I could feel him staring at me. I told myself I was being paranoid and turned my head around to look out of the window instead of looking at him. The man took a seat two seats in front of me.

A few seconds after he sat down, he took his phone out to call someone. I tried to ignore what he was doing but something about him was just so mysterious.

"I found her. She has long, dark brown hair and brown eyes right? She's just behind me."

I looked around the bus frantically. I was the only one that had long, dark brown hair and brown eyes. In fact, I was the only girl in the bus. What was going on today? First I had such a weird dream, and now this was happening.

Just then, the bus stopped and the man in front of me stood up. He looked like he was going to walk towards me but before he could, my friend from fencing boarded the bus and walked passed him. I signalled him to sit next to me and he did. My friendship with him was odd. Somehow we were close, but yet again, we weren't that close either. But I really didn't want to be alone because I was afraid of what the man in front of me was going to do. Right after my friend sat down, the man in front of me sat down as well.

"Well, what a surprise. I didn't expect you to signal me to sit next to you," Channing said as he placed his backpack on the floor.

"Who's that?" Channing asked curiously when he noticed I was too distracted by the man in front.

"I don't know."

"Then why do you keep looking at him?"

"I'll tell you later if I see you in school."

I chatted with Channing about other, random things for the rest of the trip to school. I always enjoyed chatting with him. I felt close to him whenever we chatted. But we are in different classes, and every time we see each other, we barely made any eye contact or talked to each other. Some times when he sees me he would push one of his friends towards me, though, in an attempt to make me bump into someone I didn't even know. The only time we really did talk was during or after fencing. Other than that, we didn't really talk. But even though we hardly talked, once we start a conversation, it was easy to continue talking.

When we reached school, we went our own separate ways, without saying goodbye. But that was normal. As for the man in front of me, when I had alighted bus, I noticed he wasn't there anymore. I was probably too engrossed in talking to Channing, that I hadn’t noticed him leaving. Channing always manages to make me laugh one way or another. I just hope I won't see that man again.
