**PROLOGUE**
"Mama..." a nearly 6-moon old she-kit whimpered, huddled with her two litter-mates in some thick vines. The kit had golden fur with gray and black spots, gray forelegs, brown hind legs, a brown underbelly and muzzle, and a black tail-tip. Her purple eyes glimmered with worry as she watched her mother fight off a brown and white fox.
"Spottedkit... I'm scared." A solid white she-kit whispered to her sister. Spottedkit looked at her.
"It's okay, Ivykit. Mama will be done soon." She mewed soothingly, glancing at her sister. Spottedkit couldn't bear to look into those big, sad green eyes.
"How can you be so sure?" meowed their solid black brother, his blue eyes glaring at her defiantly.
"I'm not sure, Duskkit. I'm hopeful." Spottedkit snapped. Her brother growled defiantly but she saw a glint in his eye that said he was grateful she was there.
Spottedkit was the oldest of the three. Though they were of the same litter, she had come out first. The other two treated her like she was a 'paw already, which made her uncomfortable.
The fox shrieked in pain, snapping Spottedkit back to the problem that faced their mother. Their mother had the fox pinned, with her claws at its neck, but she looked like she was too weak to hold it down for much longer. Spottedkit swallowed a lump of worry when it arose in her throat. She needed to keep her cool.
"Kits, go back to the Clans. Hurry! Don't look back." She meowed, struggling against the hungry fox.
"But mama..." Ivykit began to protest.
"I'll be right behind you." She meowed soothingly. Ivykit hesitated but nodded. They had all seen right through her lie. She was going to die by the paws of the fox. Spottedkit growled. She would hunt that fox down when she was a warrior and kill it with her own claws. She blinked a sad goodbye at her mother and nudged Ivykit toward the borders.
That's all it took to get her running. Soon they were pelting as a threesome toward the borders and when they reached them they stopped.
"Where should we go?" Panted Duskkit. They were outside the border that separated MistClan and ForestClan from the territory that belonged to the Twolegs and kittypets. MistClan was for the sneaky: the cats who blended in with the night and the mist. ForestClan was for the strong: the fierce and loyal.
Spottedkit looked at her littermates and studied them. Ivykit was small and lithe with long legs. She would be good at hiding in mist or behind rocks. Duskkit was the same build as Ivykit, but he was a tom so he was a little bigger. In contrast, Spottedkit had fine muscles and more a colorful pelt that would blend better in the forest than in the mist or behind rocks. Plus, she would stand out in the moonlight.
Spottedkit sighed. Normal kits don't think strategically.
"Where do you want to go?" She asked, not finding a good solution to their problem.
"MistClan." They answered in unsion. Spottedkit glanced uneasily at the misty forest. Farther into the territory there was land with only rocks and grass. That made Spottedkit uneasy. She looked at ForestClan territory, a dense forest area with soft dirt and so many good climbing trees. Then she found the solution.
"You guys go to MistClan. I'll leave a trail that will lead the fox into ForestClan territory. The fox will follow me, the lone cat, since I'll be easy prey. I'll catch a patrol and they'll chase the fox out of the territory. By that time you two should be in the camp by then and we'll all be ha-safe. We'll all be safe." She forced the words out, almost choking on them when she realised her mother was probably dead now. "Go."
Ivykit was about to object but Duskkit nodded and pushed their sister into the mist. Ivykit blinked a sad goodbye then turned to walk on her own.
When they were gone, Spottedkit took a deep breath and began to leave her scent, going over it a couple times to make sure it was stronger than her sibling's, then she took off into ForestClan territory, making sure to stay on the border. After a while, she heard the pounding of the fox's paws. But shouldn't it be on this side of the border...?
Spottedkit heard a shriek on the other side of the border, then bolted across to find the source. Not two heartbeats later she came to an opening with a bunch of rocks and boulders. In the side of it, next to some of the boulders, the brown fox stood sniffing at a couple of cat bodies. One body had a white pelt that was stained red and the other had a black pelt.
Spottedkit let out an angry shriek as adrenaline coursed through her little apprentice sized veins and she charged the fox. The fox snarled and charged her as well. She was expecting it. She jumped up over the fox, planted her paws on the side of a boulder and pushed off, spinning herself around to land on the fox's back.
She dug her claws into its skin to hold on and bit into its neck. She heard it shriek and pride swelled up in her. She dug her claws in deeper and bit down harder until she found the neckbone with her teeth. She bit harder and the fox's body went limp under her paws. She numbly got off the fox and spat the bitter blood on its white face.
Stumbling from exhaustion, she made her way to the ForestClan border. A patrol was there. Maybe they were saying something to her. She couldn't hear either way. The last thing she saw was a black and white pelt heaving her onto its back before everything faded to black.
