Peter had stayed at his aunt's house for a couple of days before he called Rosemary. Carolina answered.
"Hello?"
"Is Rosemary free?"
"Lemme check."
There was silence.
"Yeah."
"Ask her if she wants to hang out for a little while."
More silence.
"She said yeah."
"I'll be right over."
Peter hung up the phone. Aunt Shelly smiled at him. "Who's Rosemary?" She asked before he headed out the door.
"My girlfriend," Peter replied turning to her. Girlfriend sounded weird coming out of his mouth, but he was pretty sure about the way they felt about eachother.
Shelly smiled. "Oh, was that her parents then?" She asked.
"No, her roommate," Peter said.
"Oh, why didn't her roommate give the phone to her?" Shelly asked assuming that Peter and Rosemary would have been sweet talking each other over the phone like she had as a kid.
"Rosemary's deaf," Peter said kinda matter of fact. It came off very accusing. He didn't mean it to.
Shelly stared at him. "Really?"
Peter nodded. He braced himself for the disapproving words, but all he got was a smile.
"My daughter is deaf, Phoebe," Shelly said smiling. "I sent her to a deaf college a few months ago."
"Phoebe, didn't you take her to one of our concerts?" Peter asked.
"Yeah, she loved it. She told me she thought your friend Micky was cute," Shelly said laughing as she remembered.
"Didn't she object to going to watch us since she can't hear?" Peter asked.
Shelly's brow furrowed. "No. She loves music," Shelly said.
Peter's brow furrowed. "I don't understand," He said slowly.
Shelly frowned for a moment as she thought of a way to explain to him how her daughter felt the music. "You know when you play your bass and you can feel the vibrations all over you?" Peter nodded. "It's like that except with the drums and the bass and everything she can feel. I mean I guess. I can hear so I don't really know, but that's how she described it to me once."
Peter thought for a moment about the feeling of being on stage, the noise and vibrations he felt in his whole body. His eyes widened and he smiled. "Can I bring Rosemary back here?" He asked.
Shelly smiled and nodded. Peter ran out of the house and towards Rosemary's apartment. He knocked on the door excitedly. Carolina answered it. Rosemary was standing by the door with a smile on her face. She ran to hug him. He kissed her softly then smiled and took her hand.
Rosemary stared at Peter confused as he lead her outside. He hadn't noticed how nice it was a day until he slowed down. It was so clear and bright. They walked together to his aunt's house. Rosemary looked confused.
Peter stopped and smiled at her. "This is my aunt's house," He said.
Rosemary bit her lip. She asked him to repeat himself and he did. It took her a moment before she understood what he meant then she smiled. She asked him if she was going to meet his aunt, and Peter nodded excitedly. She couldn't help but smile at his enthusiasm.
Peter and Rosemary walked into the house. Shelly was in the kitchen putting a batch of cookies in the oven. She heard the door close and turned. She smiled as she saw Rosemary enter. She automatically started signing greetings to Rosemary. Rosemary smiled widely. Peter was left in the dark as the two women started talking. He could only catch small bits and pieces of the conversation when he really tried.
Shelly decided that they should bring Peter into the conversation. She smiled at him. "Why didn't you tell me you were dating such a beautiful girl?" She asked signing with her words.
Rosemary smiled at Shelly's words.
"It must have slipped my mind. Rosemary is one of the most beautiful people I've ever met," Peter said trying to sign with his words too.
Rosemary told him to stop or she might blush. Peter smiled. He turned to her. "She very well might be the most beautiful person I know," He said signing the best he could.
Rosemary's face slowly turned pink as Peter started to give her more and more compliments. He complimented her lips and hair and skin and eyes and everything about her. Shelly smiled as Peter showered his girlfriend with compliments. To stop the blush crawling across her nose she covered her eyes.
Peter took Rosemary's hands. He smiled at her. "I want to play for you," He said.
Rosemary's brow furrowed. She asked him what he meant.
"My bass, I want to play for you," He said before walking her to the garage.
Rosemary sat down rather close to the amp on a bench. Peter plugged his instrument into the amp and sat down. He tuned his bass then turned the amp on. He strummed one of the strings before he started playing a simple blues bassline. Rosemary felt the sounds on her skin. He started to play faster and deviated from the blues bassline. Rosemary felt the notes in her chest. She smiled as he played more and more and got more and more into the music. He could feel the music resonating inside of him, and she could feel the music too.
Rosemary reached out and touched the bass. The vibrations travelled through her body. Her fingertips tingled, and she started laughing. Peter leaned forwarded and kissed her. The bass touched her forearm, and she started giggling again.
Peter got caught up in her smile. She saw him staring and looked away quickly with a light pink blush on her cheeks. He rested his bass off to the side and took her hands. She looked back at him. He leaned forward and kissed her again.
"Thank you," Peter said.
Rosemary's brow furrowed. She asked him what for. Peter smiled knowingly.
"Thank you for letting me love you," He said.
Rosemary smiled. She thanked him for loving her then leaned forward and kissed him lightly. Shelly walked in just as they drew apart. She had a plate of cookies.
"Do you guys want some cookies?" She asked smiling at the couple.
Peter nodded happily and took the plate from his aunt. He handed a cookie to Rosemary and she took it and smiled. She thanked Peter's aunt.
Shelly smiled at Rosemary. She really like Rosemary. She seemed like such a sweet girl, just right for Peter. Shelly really wished them the best.
