Rachel slowly walked, looking at every single book on the shelves. There were many kinds of books; some were about finding who you are in God, and some were about His everlasting grace. She did not know what she was looking for, yet, she had a feeling God knew what she needed to read. Lately, her faith has been lukewarm, she felt spiritually empty. God has been so quiet, and she was going through a dry season in her life.
It was the first time Rachel had missed church, she had a feeling God wanted her here, in the Christian book section at Chapters. As she continued to peek at every book, something caught her attention; it was a boy about her age. This boy was dressed in black baggy jeans and smelled of smoke; he looked to be about sixteen, just like her.
“Why is a boy like him here, looking at bibles?” she thought.
Instantly, Rachel shoved off those horrible thoughts, and began to think of what Jesus would do. Jesus would love the boy, he would talk to him. Rachel felt God nudge at her heart to talk to this kid, yet, Rachel felt very doubtful. She was scared; she was scared to say the wrong things. Suddenly Rachel thought of the verse in Exodus 4:12 “Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say."
“Now go!” a voice whispered in her heart.
The boy stood still, flipping through a black bible. He seemed troubled, and something was definitely on his mind. Rachel walked closer, and tapped his shoulder; the boy looked over at her, and frowned. He set the bible down, and shoved his hands in his pockets.
“Are you a Christian?” he asked simply.
Rachel looked him in the eyes, and saw so much hurt and pain.
“Yes I am.” She answered.
The boy looked back at the bible he had in his hands just moments ago; he picked up the bible and turned it over, examining it.
“How do you know he’s real? I mean, how can you have faith in someone you can’t see?” he questioned.
This was it, the moment God would reveal himself through Rachel. She could feel her heart pound in her chest, and she clenched her fist shut. She felt the spirit move through her heart, and suddenly she could not help but love this boy.
“God is like the wind, I can not see Him, yet I can feel Him.” She said.
The boy looked at the bible once again, this time not putting it back down. He looked up, tears in his eyes, and then all of a sudden he smiled the biggest smile Rachel had ever seen. This boy’s face was glowing; he clearly knew God would be with Him.
“Thanks.” He whispered. “You know, I was going to go to a party, but something in my heart told me to come here.” He smiled.
At that, the boy turned around with the bible in his hands and left. Even though this moment was short, and her words were few, she felt she had changed that boy’s life. If she had not talked to him, he would of left empty handed. God definitely moved in Rachel’s heart, and the dry season was now over, she could move on, changing people’s lives. That was her calling, and she would pursue this new discovery. God really does make miracles happen!
