I woke up screaming, the dream, again. I clasped my head in my hands and cried. I thought of my family, of Dylan, of mom, dad, my friends and now for Max. I heard Max running up the stairs,
"Are you okay?" he said looking around the room holding his gun, alert,
"It was just a dream. I'm sorry, go back to sleep," I said wiping back my tears,
"If you need me, just call," he said, his hand on the door handle, about to go back downstairs. He turned to leave,
"Wait," I said, stopping him,
"Yeah?"
"Will you, stay? With me?" He turned around and sat next to me on the bed,
" Your wound will heal soon, and you'll be able to leave,"
"Come with me, we'll find asylum somewhere out of the city"
"I-" he was cut off, someone was banging on the door downstairs.
"Wait here," Max grabbed his gun and locked the door. There was someone in the kitchen"Get under the bed," Max said helping me out of the comfort of the bed. He closed the blinds of the window and turned off the light, making it dark and eerie. He walked silently to the door and unlocked it.
"Don't," I said trying to stop him. But it was too late He pushed down the handle and silently cracked open the door, he looked back at me,
"Stay here," he said locking the door behind him.
I quickly slithered out from under the bed and tried to open it but he had locked me in. I needed to help him and I could't from in here. Suddenly I heard gunshot followed by a series of yelling and shooting. I ran to the closet trying to find a weapon of some sort but all I could find were a pair of old silver scissors.
I heard someone running up the stairs followed by someone else. "No ones up there" Max said stopping in front of the door. I swiftly ran to hide behind a cabinet, my hands tightly grasping the scissors. The door was thrust open and two bodies flew in, throwing fists at each other one of them was Max, and the other, was a mutant. I watched Max's eyes shift quickly to check under the bed to find me gone. I squeezed the scissors tight, waiting for the mutant to spot me. Suddenly the mutant grabbed at Max's throat and suffocating him. This was it, I said to myself. I jumped out and plunged the scissors into the mutant's back. It screamed in pain and loosened its grip on Max as he quickly shuffled onto his feet, running to the bed-side table and grabbing another gun. He ran up to the squealing mutant, and planted two bullets in its head. I couldn't hold it, it came up. I ran to the bathroom and puked in the sink. It wasn't the blood that scared me but, it was the feeling of the scissors tearing into it's flesh.
"We have to leave," Max said looking out of the blinds anxiously before grabbing a backpack quickly from the wardrobe,
"What is it?"
"I think we have company," he says stuffing things into the bag.I looked out the window, and saw at least nine mutants marching towards the house,
"He must've signaled for backup when he heard me," Max said tossing my backpack at me.
Suddenly from the window I heard, "you have 60 seconds to surrender yourselves or your dwelling will be destroyed,"
Max looked outside from the side of the blinds, "get out through the bathroom window!" he screamed pushing me in front of him, ushering me to the bathroom. He threw the backpacks out of the window. He got out first, jumping out of the two story window, and rolling onto the backpacks,
"Jump," he said holding his arms out, "I'll catch you".
I put a leg out, one at a time until I sat on the edge of the sill and then dropped down into his waiting arms. We jumped and rolled onto the floor but thankfully our fall was cushioned by the packed bags. We got up in a hurry and ran across the yard, climbing over the fence. I stepped over the dead mutant from the day before, his green eyes, were dim and almost human... almost. All of a sudden I hear a massive explosion behind me. I turned quickly to see Max's house ablaze. Shards of glass and pieces of wood flew everywhere. "We've gotta go," Max says taking my hand and running through the empty street,
"There they are," I turned around to see the gang of mutants shooting at us in the distance,
"Run!" Max said pushing me to safety in an alleyway. He turned and started shooting at them. With exactly nine bullets, he shot them all.
He came over to me, "Where do you live?"
