The elf runs quickly, she turns to see the wizard stumbling behind her. He trips over his robes constantly, she sends a pulse of energy at their pursuers to give them time. The wizard gets to his feet quickly once more and he and the elf continue running, enemies close behind. The wizard looks in front of them and sees more of them up ahead.

"It's time to stop running." he states, stopping and turning to face those behind. The elf gives a sharp nod and roots herself in place, this was the final stand. The air was crackling with otherworldly magic, they could all feel it. The wizard and elf are soon trapped within a ring of their enemies, but they won't back down, they'll fight to the end. The wizard pulls out his wand, ready. The elf touches the ground and renews her energy, she was ready. The ring starts to close in, they had no choice but to make the first move. The elf brings her hands together and slowly draws them out, she was going to attempt the largest pulse she could manage. The wizard casts a field of energy around them. The elf closes her eyes and releases the pulse, all enemies stagger backwards, and the wizard falls from his feet too. He recovers faster than the others though, getting right back up. The elf restores her energy again, touching the ground at her feet. The wizard sends spells left and right, keeping the others away. The elf throws whatever she can towards any who come too close. Both wizard and elf try to remember a weakness, the way to kill their enemies. They both come to the conclusion at the same time.

"Fiery emotion." they say together. That meant thinking of an emotional and powerful memory and using it as fuel for a fire. The wizard sends out the first spark of emotion, catching the closest of their enemies on fire. The orange flame engulfs the wailing creature with delight, gaining more force the longer its victim lives. The creature finally falls silent and its charred body, if you could even call it that, falls to the ground at the wizard's feet. He sends out another flame, flame after flame. The elf wavers though, trying to think of any emotional memory. She finally gets one and throws out a flame. The blood red flames devour the creature and its screams are more haunting than the burnt heap left behind. Wizard and elf continue to send flames towards their enemies, but for every one they killed, two took its place. The creatures realize though, they were losing numbers. Slowly, the creatures separate the two, splitting them from each other. Now, elf and wizard are each ringed by creatures. The orange flashes slowly become less frequent, and then, stop all together. The wail from the wizard freezes the elf, it was just her now. She touches the ground, readying for her final effort. She stands boldly and delves deep to find her most powerful memory, once she finds it, it's her lifeline. She focuses on one thing, getting to the wizard, dead or alive, he needed her. She sends out the flame and the whole forest lights blood red. The heat affects even her, but nothing compares to the screeching coming from the creatures. She runs to the fallen wizard, there was a chance to save him. She sends out one last flame before placing both palms on the forest floor, she needed more energy than she could probably get. Slowly she rested both hands on the wizard's chest, she could feel his heart beat, faint and staggered as it was. She took in a deep breath, ignoring the foul stench of burnt flesh. The elf's eyes flicked closed and her hands glowed with a pale green light. The light slowly increases and her eyes shut more forcefully. The green light soon becomes blinding and then, it vanishes. The elf slumps to the ground, completely exhausted. The wizard sits up slowly and looks at her on the forest floor, where she belonged. He shook his head, they were far from where they belonged. He stood up cautiously and his eyes went wide. They're final stand was far from over.

** Enjoy this little spurt of inspiration I had at two in the morning one night. :D I hope someone actually reads it anyway... The video I attached is the song I listened to while writing this, I think it fits quite well too. :)
