Chapter 8: Memories

At first, I'm confused. Who's the witch? Then it clicks.

Our mother, of course.

"What?! No, no, no, no, no I don't." I scramble towards Tabs bag, rummaging through it until I find what I'm looking for: a mirrior.

I stare at my reflection, studying my eyes. They're a pale green, almost like mint but not quite. There are like two specks of blue, but the green makes them almost invisible.

I felt like barfing. My eyes look...like hers?!!?!

"I...feel...sick..." I mumble, not even sure how to take this.

Suddenly, my mind whirrs to life and I'm being sucked into something, sucked away.

"Help!" I try chanting, but nobody is listening. I try crawling back but I keep falling.

And that's when I lose conscious.

~~

"Faster!" he gasped through breaths as we skidded around a tree, our feet trampling the wet leaves under our muddy shoes.

We were here, running away from home. And as fate had it, the police were here on patrol. But if they saw us, they'll send us back to Dad, and Dami and I didn't want that. Unfortunately, we weren't alerted of that so I'm pretty sure when the heard footsteps, they assumed it was a trespasser or something and began chasing us, and this has been going on for ten minutes.

"They're getting closer!" He hissed, as we broke into an even faster sprint. My lungs begged for two seconds, just to stop for two seconds. They begged for oxygen. But I refused to stop. Just those two seconds can result in me landing back to Square 1.

"Pssst! Over here!!" he grabs my wrist as he yanks me into a bush, me falling face-first into a pile of soaking leaves.

"Oww!!" I yell as he hushed me, and I shut up. I can hear footsteps getting closer and closer. I grab Dami's hand to stop myself from shivering, even though it's not cold. He squeezes my hand, as we sit patiently in silence. This was like standing on the edge of a cliff, the tension rising too fast. Except, this was reality and there was no escape.

Finally after a few minutes of barking orders and running feet, the sound of people disappear and the crickets come out, slowly playing a tune. I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding, and Dami looks at me, the biggest smile ever covering his face.

"We did it, Azure! We escaped them!!" he squealed and I laugh in joy, still keeping it discreet incase they come back. We share a hug, relief pouring out of me.

"We should make a campfire." I says and he nods, as we walk towards a clearing we found. If you look close enough, you can see the trampled footsteps of the cops.

"I saw a fallen tree a little over there. We can recycle it." I say, and he nods again as we walk towards it. We decide not to use the flashlight until it's a total emergency, because batteries were expensive. We managed to get our Kenny's, which are a sort of a currency system for kids. It's unlimited money, but has to be refilled after a certain amount of time. And the best part? You can buy absolutely anything with it!

"Here, catch." Dami grunts as he chucks me a log that I almost miss, but catch somehow. Fortunately for us, it's broken in such a way that the wood is easy for us to hold. Hmm, I guess it's fate.

"I wish we could make s'mores." He says wistfully as I nod, the idea of a gooey, sweet marshmallow treat sounding like heaven right now.

"We have mushrooms and chicken?" I suggest instead, as we laugh.
