Pein heard the thud coming from the bedroom where Kaito mustn't ran off into and felt his heart skip a beat for just an instance. His legs couldn't have gone any faster and upon entering her room, he froze, his body stiffening as if ice cold water had been dumped on him. His eyes had widened very slightly, almost unnoticeably at what he saw. Kaito's body lay on the ground, twitching and shivering violently as her lips started turning blue. She was suffocating as her wind pipe closed up on her completely, rendering her unable to breathe, strangled gasps coming from her as she tried desperately to inhale oxygen. Pein didn't have any time to lose. He knew she was having another panic attack, one that was worse than her previous one, and needed her medication and fast if she was going to live.

Pein didn't even glance at the other members in the living room as he practically threw the refrigerator door open and grabbed the pills along with a bottle of water jerkily, his actions shaky and movements quick and sloppy. No less than ten seconds later, he was there on the ground, placing her head on his lap as he tried to hold her steady and popped a pill in her mouth, slowly pouring some water between her blue lips. His hands were shaking by the time she swallowed the pill forcefully, slightly gagging from the size of the pill, his nerves on high alert. He was never this concerned about anyone before in his life. He was placing her safety above everything else. Only Konan could ever bring out the soft side of him.

Yahiko and Konan, along with his former sensei, were the very few, and only people, he would ever care about, yet here he was, concerned with the life of a human boy- no, girl- whom he had never met before in his life was now suddenly a vital part of his life, his entire being.

Kaito, a 17-year-old teenage girl, cross-dressing as a boy, had somehow made her way into the depths of his cold, dark heart. How she did it was a complete mystery to him, but one thing's for sure, Pein wasn't going to let her go that easily. The girl was now a part of his life, and even though he had tried convincing himself so many times before that she was nothing but a mere human, there was always that small nagging feeling in his mind that told him to not let her go, not to allow her to slip from his fingers. What Pein didn't know was that Kaito would later on become a valuable aspect in the Akatsuki's true intentions, given some time and training.

Itachi, Sasori, Deidara, and Kakuzu had stayed behind to keep an eye on the lava lamp (and a swirly-faced Akatsuki member who was acting like he got high off coffee), while Hidan and Kisame had followed Pein into the room where they witnessed Pein, once again, saving the life of their caretaker.

The two of them couldn't understand it. They had been in the Akatsuki ever since it had first been created and could never get Pein to show an ounce of emotion no matter how many times Hidan annoyed him. It was always the same reaction; yet here he was, concerned about another life, showing the most emotion they had ever seen on him.

The 22-year-old Jashinist didn't know what to think. The boy had saved his life and forgave him for his misdemeanors. He had grown attached to the boy, especially after he had found out about their true identities. Kaito hadn't kicked them out, revealed them to anyone, nor did he do anything irrational. He had kept their secret safe, even had taken him out to the boy's many swim meets the past few days. The feeling that rose in his chest was unexplained to Hidan. Never in his long life of being a Jashinist had he felt this emotion before, and he couldn't explain it as he watched the boy's unconscious body being lifted up by the leader and placed onto the bed.

His lips were slightly blue, more purple though, his skin was pale as a ghost, and no movement came from his body, not even a single breath being inhaled or exhaled or even so much as a twitch of his finger. Kisame closed his eyes and bowed his head sadly as he trotted back into the living room, his heart slightly clenching in pain. Hidan, on the other hand, went stiff when he saw the boy's condition, gulping as his body moved on its own, walking closer to the bed.
