"(Y/n), you're just a child. But for me, for yourself, for your mother. Please watch over her and give her protection. Please, make the deal with me and watch over her." The girl nodded and-
"Mama!" She wailed. She was too late.
I was immediately shaken up as L woke up and sprang to life. I was startled, grabbed his arm and raised my fist. I drew my first away in panic, remembering where I was. "Ryu, I'm so sorry! I didn't realize it was you!" I felt comfortable addressing him as Ryu, it was much more friendly. He was silent, but then laughed. "It's okay." He said as he flashed a bright smile. He held my hand and led me out of the room. "Let's get breakfast, you haven't eaten yet." I nodded and smiled. I was happy someone cared for my well being.
We entered the kitchen and kids were flooding the scene, fighting over cereal. Although this was an orphanage for talented children they were still children. I stayed glued to the spot as Ryu went to get something. A taller kid walked over to me, presumably 10. Tan, brown eyes and dark hair. "I heard about last night. Haha, did ya really hurt 'em?" I jumped a little, but nodded. "Y-yeah. They were fighting. He laughed and shook my hand. "The names William, but you can call me Will. Pleased to meet ya! What's your name?"
"(Y/n)."
"Well, nice to meet ya, (Y/n). I gotta go before your boyfriend comes back." He sang. My face burned red and I couldn't say anything.
'Boyfriend?!'
"Don't make her mad, Will. Or she'll hit ya too! Har har!" The pair laughed and skipped off, leaving my face a tomato. The embarrassment rushed over me and before anymore children could embarrass me I ducked behind a bookcase away from the kitchen. Ryu found me with pancakes on a plate. "Huh, (Y/n), what happened? Did anyone hurt you? I can-"
"No."
He crouched down next to me and pulled his knees up to his chest. He took a plain pancake and began to nibble on it. "What did they say?" He asked, attempting to break the silence. I was looking at his awkward sitting habit that I ignored the question. "O-oh, It's not important." He gave me a funny look. "You don't open up to people, do you?" I shrugged and took a pancake, peering over the corner to see Watari talking to a man I hadn't recognized. My heart sank as I realized who it was.
He pointed towards me and Watari urged us to walk to them. I hesitated, so Ryu grabbed my shaking hand and dragged me over. "Oh, dear (Y/n), thank goodness you're safe! We were so worried!" The man locked me into a tight hug, constricting me in his lock. "Thank you so much for looking after her, Quillish. As I've told you she's quite mentally disabled. She's been going in and out of stability, I'm afraid she's not suitable to be out of treatment in her state. As sweet as she looks she's quite manipulative. You're in our debt." He said sweetly.
I looked over to Ryu for help, but his face fell and gave me a scared, panicked expression. Watari didn't say anything, instead he looked at me, mildly disappointed. "I don't know you." I backed up and tried to ease the situation. "I'm sorry," the man started. "This must be one of her games she plays. (Y/n), sweetie, don't worry. It's me, you're going home. Now say goodbye to the nice man." Watari nudged me towards the man and gave a half smile. "Please go with him, they can help you."
The color from my face drained and I backed up even further. "No!" Watari stared at me in astonishment. "(Y/n)-" I cut him off. "No, I don't know him!" I screamed at the top of my lungs and the room fell silent. All of the children's eyes were on me. Ryuk was right, ambush. I shoved through the crowd and dashed through the hallways to Ryu's room and locked it. Footsteps became louder, they were soon followed by pounding on the door.
The pounding died down and I could hear a faint whisper. "Please let me in, I promise I won't hurt you." Ryu whispered. I cracked open the door and let him slip through. He locked the door and the door handle began to rattle once more. Tears pricked my eyes as Ryu tried to console me. "Don't be ashamed that you-"
"No, I don't! That man is deceiving all of you, he's a bad man. He's going to hurt me." I said through sobs. He wrapped me in a warm embrace with wide eyes. "Really?" The door creaked open With Watari and the man following behind, holding a key."Get away from her!" Ryu roared. "Lawliet, I know she's your friend but-" he wouldn't back down. "He's going to hurt her!" Watari exchanged an odd look with the man, nodded, and then stepped closer. Ryu backed us up. "Lawliet, please don't make this harder than it has to be." He gripped onto me tighter and Watari stepped forth. He took a deep breath and let out a sigh. "Is what you're saying true?" The boy nodded and examined the man.
"She told me that he was going to hurt her."
Watari turned his attention to me, heightening my nerves. A few kids piled up at the corner of the door to peer in. I saw William, a familiar face. Tears streamed down my face and I had to wipe them off continuously. "I don't know him, I'm perfectly capable of being a citizen. Is that hard to see? Don't you believe me?" The man turned around, scaring the kids back into the main room. "I'll give her one day, so I'll come for her tomorrow morning. Please sure nothing happens to her or I'll be in trouble."
Lawliet's grip began to hurt, but I didn't care. "No, no, no! " I dropped to my knees and started sobbing. Watari turned around and began to walk out. "I'm sorry (Y/n), but this man has all of the paperwork. I cannot trust you." And he walked out, leaving us alone. I let out a quiet sob and cried harder. "I don't want you to go." He whispered faintly. His voice was full of emptiness, it startled me.
'Tomorrow was the end...'
I parted from the hug and took off my pendant, which took the shape of a heart. I separated the pieces to reveal they were magnets stuck together. I gave Ryu the other shimmering blue half. "Please don't forget me." I whispered through tears. He took it and held me tight.
"I could never forget you."
I'm sorry if it's confusing to call L 2-3 different things ;-; (y/n) uses Ryu, and Watari uses Lawliet in the orphanage (and Ryuzaki outside)
