I tried to get comfortable in our small car, but the bags falling on top of me weren't helping. All I knew about where we were going was that it was far, far away from our old house. My parents did this all the time, get a new house, meet the wrong people, and then it's either get arrested or run. My parents always, and I mean always run. My name is Mary by the way. I'm a teenager and have one sibling. A sister to be exact. All the other girls with sisters that I've met have an amazing bond with their sister. All my sister and I do is fight, throw stuff at each other, and occasionally, I get onto her for using my bed when her boyfriends come over. My parents couldn't care less about me, but my sister they absolutely adore. She is an absolute b-word and it's a surprise that she isn't pregnant yet. I on the other hand could pass for the red-headed stepchild, with my dark scarlet hair and pale skin. I'm abused by all of them, I do the laundry, make every meal, and never have any time by myself. If that isn't enough, I'm bullied at every school we go to. I finally was able to doze off looking out of the window.
-8 Hours Later-
I am awakened as usual, a slap on the face from my dad, my mom screaming in my ear, and my sister threatening me with a knife. What a wonderful family I have. They tell me to get the stuff out of the car, or else. I drug all of their stuff out, unpack it, and they stick me in the attic of the house. Just like every other house. I toss my little bag of clothes on the bed, and change out of my clothes into a pair of shorts with a black hoodie and tennis shoes, to go running. I slip out of the attic window, landing in the bushes. I got back up and jump the the back fence, which was only a few inches shorter than me. I land in someone else's backyard, but no one seems to be home. I walk in between a huge gap in the fence. I stop for a second to take in the layout of the neighborhood. I jump when I hear a twig snap, and I turn around to see what it is. I feel like I'm being watched. There's nothing behind me... it was probably me...I thought. I flinch when I hear my mother's voice calling me. I sigh and decide that I'll try again tomorrow. But for now, dinner had to be made by somebody, and I have school tomorrow. I jump over our fence and use the cracks in the stone of the house to climb back into my room. I throw my nightgown on and run to the kitchen.
-Next Day-
I get up at five in the morning, throw on a pair of black skinny jeans and hoodie and boots, and make breakfast. I go ahead and get on the bus that stops in front of our house, not worrying about my sister. My parents will probably trash what I made and get her what she wants. I step onto the bus and walked straight to the back.
The people just stared at me. I hear, "Ha goth chick," and "Her hair...why is she so pale?" A girl looks at me and pats the seat next to her. I consider it then sit with her anyway. She has black hair with blue and pink highlights.
She sticks her fist out and says, "Hi. My name is Nina. I know. I got pretty much the same reaction when I was new here. They call me moon girl at school."
I bump her fist with mine and say, "My names Mary. When did you start coming to this school?"
She smiles at me and says, "I actually have only been going here for three days. Slend- uh I mean my dad thought it was time to move to a new place." I nod absentmindedly and look out of the window as we drive up to the school. It's made out of all red brick and has hideous greenish roofs. There is a sidewalk that we are instructed to follow to the gym.
I ask Nina to show me where the office is. She grabs my hand and we run to the office to get my schedule. My first period class was my decision, so I chose the school's self defense class. 2nd period: Science, 3rd period, first half: Lunch then free time second half...I didn't get a chance to finish reading it because Nina snatched it out of my hand and whispered, "Okay, Mary, don't freak out on me, but you won't be needing this. We are leaving. Now."
