Once upon a time, there lived a small piece of toast.
This Toast's name was Whitey, for he was the whitest piece of bread in the world. Yet, because he was really white, he had no friends.
This made Whitey sad.
It seemed that no matter how hard he tried to get toasted, he would remain the same shade of white.
Thus began his quest to find a way to make him darker.
Along the way, he first stopped near a bridge where another piece of toast was. This piece appeared to be close to the edge and about to jump off. Whitey quickly rushed his lil white self over to the other toast, shouting for them to stop. He had a shouting match with this piece of toast until the other calmed down and got away from the edge.
This piece of bread was wheat and named Ticker. The reason Ticker was going to jump of the bridge was because he felt as if he were too toasty for his friends. Every single one of them was lighter and more scrumchis, so he felt lonely.
Whitey took in this story and offered to be friends, pleasing Ticker. Ticker then heard Whitey's story on his quest to get darker, and joined, hoping to find a friend with similar toasty-ness. Yet, as they searched they happened to come across another piece of toast.
The toast piece was just reading a book on a bench, but when other pieces went by, they cursed and shunned them. Whitey and Ticker noticed this toast was poker-faced, but they could tell something was up.
They quickly went over to the toast and sat down next to them. Surprised, the golden toast asked them why they sat down. Whitey explained that the other toast looked lonely and Ticker continued saying that no one should be lonely. This sparked up the toast's feelz and he, known as Aubs, then proceeded to explain that he was a white piece of bread, but cooked to a golden complexion. It was a perfect color and so it made the toast victim to bullying and shunning.
Whitey and Ticker got upset at the story, but traded their own stories on how they were rejected pieces of toast too. Aubs understood and felt more at ease knowing that he wasn't alone in this rejection.
Whitey also added that this was why he was on a quest, Ticker tagging along, and invited the golden toast to join if they wanted. Aubs quickly agreed. He knew that this may be an only chance to get friends who didn't care about his golden complexion. And thus after a moment of thinking, he joined.
They started back up on the journey and Whitey was starting to feel happy now that he had support from two outcasts like him. Somehow, someway...they would find a solution to his whiteness.
Yet, after a while of looking and traveling, they happened to come across a circus of bread. Whitey led the trio through, thinking that maybe they could take a break on the search and have some fun.
He was wrong.
Almost as if it was fate, he bumped and crashed into another piece of toast. This was another wheat piece, but cooked to an almost burnt color. The dark toast seemed to be freaking out and Whitey took quick attention to calming them down. He had experience because whenever he got hurt, nobody ever helped him so he had to learn to take care of himself.
Whitey managed to quickly calm the toast down and after a few seconds of quick breathing they explained that the group needed to follow them. Whitey noted the sense of urgency and called over Ticker and Aubs, following the stranger to a tent.
Once every piece was inside, the new toast proceeded to explain that they were named Crusti and that the others needed to be careful here. Whitey asked why and the darker toast told them that this circus took other pieces of bread and cooked them in wrong ways, making them total outcasts to the world. Crusti was once a perfect shade of wheat toast, but she got captured by the circus and got cooked until she was almost burnt.
Whitey took in this information and understood the danger they might be in. Yet, another part of him wondered....if they made Crusti that dark...could he have finally found a way to make him darker?!
Very motivated by this crazy and sudden thought, Whitey then asked if Crusti could take him to the bakers. The dark toast was surprised at this and angrily asked why.
A little confused at the reaction, Whitey told her of why he was here in the first place, also introducing his new friends and their stories. Crusti said hello to Ticker and Aubs, but then shook her head at Whitey. She then told him that he shouldn't be finding a way to cook and make him darker. He should just be fine with himself and enjoy that he was unique.
Whitey got upset at this and told her that he was shunned and lonely because he was so white and Crusti started to laugh. Whitey waited for her to calm down again and tried not to leave in anger at her reaction.
Yet, what she said next hit him like a ton of butter.
"You say you're shunned and alone...But I don't think you realized the things behind you while you were looking ahead on this quest. Ticker and Aubs have been with you on this journey too. They stayed with you and never once commented on your toastiness. They know what it's like to be shunned and wanted friends as much as you did. That's friendship."
Whitey took a moment to absorb her words and finally realized.
She was right.
Ticker and Aubs had been with him, supporting and laughing with him. They had been there all along and they never once judged each other.
Whitey nodded and almost cried in joy at this. He thanked Crusti for her words and offered her to join the trio. She could escape the circus and they could all be friends together. Crusti didn't hesitate in joining and soon they carefully left the circus and made their way home.
Epilogue:
Once upon a time there was a piece of toast. This toast's name was Whitey and he was the whitest piece of toast in existence.
Whitey once thought that he had to change in order to be happy, but now he knows that he can be himself because his friends love him for who he is and he loves them in return. He's never been happier.
The End.
