“Can you believe that after today we will be high school students?” Taevy said to me.

“Yeah, I know,” I answered her. “And before long we will be college students.”

The sun was setting but neither of us wanted to climb down the oak tree we were sitting in. The tree sat in the middle of the park and it was our favourite place to be. When we were ten we carved our names into the tree and decided we were the king and queen of it. We even held a petition a year ago when the council wanted to chop the tree down, saying it was too old. Taevy and I didn’t care if it was too old. It was our tree. A place we hung out when we wanted to be alone.

“What do you think high school would be like?” she asked me.

I thought about the movies I have seen about high school. I wonder if they would be the same as it is in the movies.

“I don’t know.”

“You know how they say everything changes in high school? Do you think anything would ever change between us, Liam?”

I didn’t have an answer for that because I didn’t know it. Taevy and I have been together forever. We lived right next door in the townhouse our families lived in. Our rooms were right next door to each other. Our birthdays were even a day apart. We were best friends and I knew nothing was ever going to change that.

I turned to look at her just as the sunlight hit her face. Although I was only twelve, I started getting feelings for Taevy a couple of weeks ago. She had these incredible brown eyes and her brown hair sat at her shoulders. Her skin was a little dark too. I haven’t told her about my feelings for her yet. I didn’t know what she might think and I didn’t want her to freak out or anything.

I smiled at her. “Nothing will ever change between us, Taevy.” I moved closer to her and slipped my hand into hers. “You and I will be together forever.”

Taevy smiled back at me and it made my heart skip a bit. “Forever and always?”

“Forever and always.”

We stared at each other. I started to get this weird feeling in the pit of my stomach, the same feeling I have been getting since I started liking Taevy more than a friend. I thought about how in movies best friends become more than that. I wonder if Taevy and I would be one of those friends.

“Taevy, have you ever thought what it would be like if you and I was more than friends?” I asked her.

Taevy thought about it for a second. “I don’t know. Aren’t we a bit too young to be dating?”

I shrugged my shoulders. “I don’t know? Maybe, but I guess there’s no harm in trying.”

Taevy didn’t answer me. She just smiled. I wasn’t sure what she was thinking. I wasn’t sure if it meant a yes. Maybe it does mean yes. I wonder if she would let me kiss her.

We stared at each other without saying anything. I slowly tilted my head forward and peck Taevy on her lips. I felt my cheeks burn. I can’t believe I had just kissed my best friend. We were both pretty stun over what we have just done.

“Um, it’s getting late,” Taevy said after our long silence. “We should better start heading home before our parents worry.”

“Yeah, we should.” Taevy’s parents are very overprotective and they always want her home at a certain time.

We climbed down the tree and walked back home where our house was just down the street from the park. We walked in silence. I replayed the kiss over and over in my head. Just thinking about it put a smile to my lips and I could still feel her lips on mine. I glanced over at Taevy and I could see the smile upon her face as well.

We reach our townhouse and stood in front of it, staring at each other.

“So do you really mean it about us being more than friends?” she asked me.

“I guess so.”

She smiled. “What about when you said we will be together forever?”

I returned the smile. “Yeah, I mean every word.” I slipped my hands into hers. “You and I will be together forever and always.”
