I wake up to the sound of children screaming and crying.
I wake up to the sound of bullets.
I wake up. To the sound of war.

Sam was just a normal kid. Nothing out of the ordinary. He liked astronomy, science and maths. He lived in a little town in New Zealand called Nelson, with his Mum Catherine, his Dad Rob, and his two bigger brothers, Peter and Caleb. They were a normal family, the kids went to school, the parents went to work.
It was the last day of school, only one class left. Sam couldn't wait for the holidays. He was going to his friend Mark's house house for the whole week. Since they lived in Australia he had to catch the plane tomorrow. So today after school he was going to the markets to by something for Marks mum and dad, he thought he should since they were having him so long. He was thinking about what he should get them when his name was called.
"Earth to Sam!" His head shot up as Mr. Smith, his teacher called. "Ah, I see you have came back to us, now that you're here, would you like to present your assignment to the class?"
"Oh, sorry, yea, um.." He grabbed his project and papers and walked up to the front of the room, pushing his glasses further up his nose as he went. "Okay, so, my assignment today is on space, planets, and stars. As we all know, there are many planets and stars...to many for us to count even"....blah blah blah. He went on about how the sun and moon and earth are aligned just right, so that we don't get to cold that we freeze to death, or to hot that we...well.....boil. He showed everyone his solar system that he made from bits of wood and cotton balls painted the color of various planets. It was quite impressive really, he put a lot of effort into it, it seemed to get the children interested, or, at least, some of them. Others just mocked him, he just thought they were jealous, and they were only doing it because they didn't understand a word he was saying. He was proud of his knowledge. His mum told him 'it doesn't matter what others think of you. Only what you think. You're special, Sam, don't be scared of that. Be proud.'
As he walked back down the aisle towards his seat. His friend Anna patted him on the back.
"Good job Sam, that was awesome." She whisper-yelled to him."Thanks Anna" he smiled at his friend. Anna was short and thin, she had ginger hair and little freckles on her cheeks and nose. She was a bit of a weird one, but Sam didn't mind. All the other kids ignored her so Sam decided she could join their group. Sam was the youngest in the group. There was Matt who was born in January, he was 12, there was Anna, she was born in march, so she was 12 too, then Jake who as born in July, so he wasn't quite 12 yet, then Lily who was also born in July, then Sam, who was born in September. They all hung out at lunch time, sat at the 'nerd' table, but they liked it there, there they could talk about all there science stuff. They were respected, so they didn't get bullied, but they weren't seen as 'cool', which didn't bother them.
"I'll see you all in six weeks!" Mr. Smith yelled as the kids started piling out of the classroom. Sam stood up and grabbed his project and school bag, slung one strap over his shoulder and headed out the door. He saw Anna waiting outside on the steps for him so he walked over.
"Six whole weeks of freedom!!" She squealed.
"Yippeeeee! We should have a freedom party next week when I get back." I smiled
"Haha, how bout just a normal party? Like, we could have balloons and streamers, and-"
"Okay, I think I get the picture." He said quickly, to stop Anna from babbling on. "That would be cool though, who's place should we have it at?"
"Not mine, mines boring, I'll go ask Lily. I'll be right back!" She yells as she runs off to find Lily. I decide to go look for Matt and Jake. They have the same math class. I spot Matt over in room 11 talking with Jake. There both a head taller then the rest of the kids so it's easy to find them, unlike me, who's a short 5'5 feet I'm probably the shortest out of my group, even lily is taller then me, standing at about 5' although Anna is 5'4 so I'm not quite the shortest. But still. I walk over to where Matt and Jake are talking."Hey guys" I half yell so they'll hear me over all the noise of the other kids
"Hey Sam!" They both yell back, the start pushing through the sea of kids making there way towards me. We meet at our table where we find some peace and quiet. Sort of.
"So, me and Anna were thinking about having a party next week, what do you guys think?"
"That would be like, awesome, but I can't believe your leaving us for the first week of the holidays!" Matt says. Flinging his hands into the air sarcastically. "Well, I only get to see him like every 4 years so....Meh"
"Meh? Is that the best you got?"
"Yes, it is."
"That's sad" He shakes his head in mock pity. I chuckle at my friend.... - If you have a best friend you know what it's like...unless we're just extra weird... - Anna comes running over with Lily close behind.
"We're alive!!" Lily yells dramatically as she throws her hands in the air while falling onto her knees.
"That hurt a lot more then i thought it would..." she says as she gets up, brushes herself off and examines the fresh little scrapes on her knees.
"That's because you didn't think" Jake says sarcastically. Lily just sticks her tongue out and turns her back on us all.
"Anyway..." Anna continues. "What do you guys think about having the party at Lily's place?"
"Yea sure" Matt nods "sounds pretty good."
"But what if I don't want it there?" Lily speaks up as she turns back around "I mean...I might not want you all running through my house."
"Oh c'mon Lily."
"Pleeeaaasssse?" We all beg. After some more whining she gives in
"Fine." She mumbles. "Yay!" Anna gives Lily a huge bear hug. Lily just stands there pulling a face of pure disgust. After some planing Sams mum Catherine - or, Cathy, as all her friends call her- comes to pick him up so she can take him to the markets. "Cya guys!!" He yells as he hops in the car. As they drive along his mum asks him about his day. "So...did you learn anything fun today?" She asks in her sweet voice "Uh...nah, not really....Mr. Smith seemed to like my project, he gave me an A" he says with a small smile on his face. "Oh that's great!" His mum says with a huge smile, she gives him a one-armed hug while keeping the other on the wheel.
They pull up outside the markets and Sam and his mum hop out of the car. "So, what were you planing on getting them?" His mum asks.
"Hm....not sure, I was thinking of getting uncle John and aunty Dorothy" -As that's what he calls Marks mum and dad- "Maybe like, a nice slice or something, I don't know" He looks down at his worn out red and black sneakers, the white writing now faded.
"That sounds like a good idea." His mum smiles down at him. "What about for Mark?" She asks as she looks at the quilts they've now found.
"A collar for smokey?"
"Smokey?...." She asks, sending Sam a puzzled look. "There little dog mum, don't you remember?"
"Oh, yes, I do.. No, that sounds like a great idea." Sam and his mum continue there way along. They buy a peach slice and a collar and continue walking around the market, window shopping, although there are no windows. They start to migrate back to the car, weaving in and out of the crowds of people. A woman, of about 20-25 years, running through the crowds, bumps into Sam, knocking him to the ground. "Oh! I'm sorry! I'm in a huge rush, I just didn't see you there" She hauls him to his feet. "It's ok, I should have moved out of the way." She looks him up and down.
"Your coming with me, quick." She takes his right hand with her left hand, as she's holding something metallic in her right.
"Wh- where are we going? What about my mum!?" He yells at her through the rushing crowds, people talking and chatting like nothings going on, because to them, nothing is.Just an ordinary day, ha, I wish.
