December 1st 2013.
I think that was the date.
Fuck I don't know. Days seemed to loop in circles these past weeks. I couldn't even remember what day it was. I think it was Sunday? Maybe Saturday.
Definitely not. Saturdays were my off days and I wouldn't be standing in this shit diner waiting patiently for the customers to sort out their meal plans if it were Saturday.
I worked everyday. Except Saturdays. Those were mine. Sort of a gift to myself for working so hard. I could have worked everyday. I should have but I couldn't bare the sound of Kelly popping her gum in my ear seven days a week. I would surely go mental.
I tapped my foot as she slid past me obnoxiously chewing her face off with that piece of shit juicy fruit she always chews. Every day.
It's been this way since January when I started working here.
Just as the little brat that belonged to the couple I was waiting kicked me in the shin and I almost spat in his chocolate milk. Charlie thew the door open dramatically, bending over in exasperation trying to catch his breath. I rolled my eyes shaking my head.
This isn't new. Charlie is always late. I'm sure he could win an award for his attendance but he would surely miss it because he was running late.
"How about you call me when you're ready to order?" I said. I'm sure my tone was distasteful but I was getting tired of the constant "hmmmmm" the man gave after looking at every page in the menu.
Before the couple could say any more I walked away, managing to hold back any remarks I could throw their way until I was at Charlie's side.
"You're early"
Charlie chuckled at my sarcasm, taking my attitude lightly. We'd known each other for four years rooting back to highshool when I had cursed him out for spilling soda on my jacket during lunch. I was mad at the world then and Him being on the football team made it worst. Charlie had taken a liking to my 'not give a fuck' attitude which he pegged was an Ellie thing, but after that day he never left me alone. And at some point I kind of liked having him around.
"Ellie, just the person I was hoping to see!"
"No way where else did you look?"
He ignored my comment as He emptied the contents of his bag onto the clean booth next to him making me groan at the mess. I had just cleaned that!
"You're cleaning this up" taking a seat at the booth while he ruffled through the messy papers.
"Guess..what I...shit where is it..oh..guess what I got in the mail today?"
He wore a bright smile on his face, excitement evident. It was rare to see him this excited. Because he's usually a downer. He may be late and unorganized but he's more responsible than anyone I Know.
"Hmm mail?"
Charlie rolled his eyes sitting down across from me and slid the envelope toward me. I looked around the diner checking to see If the couple had called for me, but of course not.
"You're going to get us fired."
Charlie shrugged and leaned foward making me sigh and reopen the envelope, taking one last look at him.
I looked up at him, then back at the letter.
"You got it?"
Charlie, grinned like the Cheshire Cat and I slid across the booth to hug him tightly. Which is a big deal. I never hug anyone.
