I heard the gunfire and my eyes shot open. It was happening again. I sat up and Matt ran through holding lily. He look at me with terror in his eyes. I shrugged at him.
"I don't know?" I said like I knew what he wanted to say. I opened the back window so we could climb out but before I could get over there the door was thrown open.
"Everyone put your hands it the air!"
I turned slowly. Matt had tears in his eyes. He slowly put lily down onto the ground. I didn't want to raise my hands. Nor did he. We froze looking at each other and the guard pointed his gun at lily.
"In the air. Are you death?" He yelled. Lily was bawling her eyes out. She hugged Matts legs he gently shoved her aside and raised his arms. I held her hand and put up my only free hand.
"Both of them."
I let go of Lily's hand and she raised both. I dropped mine.
"In order of the law we must control the population of the poorer areas to help government funds. This household contains three people so one must be removed."
Matt was terrified. I was angry.
"Don't try anything." He said looking at me knowing who I was for my bad reputation. Three more guards stepped in crowding the small room. Each had guns.
It was silent.
"But it appears one of them is wanted anyway?" He said with a devious smirk.
"Take me." I said staring him in the eye.
"I make the choices."
"It's my home, take me its me who broke the law." Matt stepped in.
"Take the girl." He said casually. Matt grabbed her but a soldier ran forward and hit his face with the butt of his gun knocking him unconscious.
"Stop! You want me anyway!"
"That is a fair point but I think someone needs to learn a lesson."
I hit him but another shot my arm. The bullet went clean through. I fell backwards. I knew there was nothing I could do. Then I watched the bullet tear through her skull.
Lily Black was 5 years old. Not her dad or uncle could save her. She died for no reason. She was murdered by her own government. I stared in awe hatred flooding me. I was too shocked to react. I felt guards grab me and drag me from the building. I watched as Matt sat up and his face flooded with grief.
"Lily..." I whispered. Then it hit me like a truck I kicked and screamed feeling every negative emotion human possible drown me like a tidal wave. I yelled and fought until I felt a gun hit my own head and I was gone.
